Frome Voices’ performance of Handel’s Saul played to a sold-out Cheese and Grain on 14th March.
The choir of over 120 singers was joined by a an orchestra of baroque instruments and seven soloists who together succeeded in conveying the drama of this great story of envy, revenge, love and triumph.
Olivia Date said, “Bringing it all together was Alan Burgess, who conducted with great energy and passion. It was another event of which Frome can be proud.
“The event also drew upon the creative work of Frome College graphics students who not only produced the artwork for the posters and programme (thanks to Tom Strippel) but also a fine selection of projected images to reflect the themes of Saul, with impressive banners that hung each side of the stage – so a visual treat as well as a musical one.
“The audience were generous in their praise and made comments like, ‘What a wonderful evening! I had no idea Frome Voices were so good!’ and ‘The orchestra produced such a lovely, warm sound – and I loved the carillon!’
“Frome Voices is a very special choir, coming together for just a short time each year to rehearse and perform a major choral work.
“It comprises both experienced singers and those who have never tried choral music before. It aims to provide an opportunity for all to experience the joy of inspiring music.
“The choir and organisers would like to thank everyone involved in the event – including the enthusiastic audience – and look forward to planning next year’s event, on 18th March 2018, so put the date in your diaries!”
