MEMBERS of Frome Canoe Club have been rewarded for their commitment to canoeing in the South West region.
George McGiveron was presented with the ‘Young Volunteer of the Year Award’ at a presentation which took place in Plymouth on 17th September. Pam Dixon was also recognised for her long service to the sport and was presented with the ‘Community Volunteer’s Award’.
Frome Canoe Club says, “George is an inspirational young person who gives his time freely to help out. He coaches for the club and each week he can be found at club sessions running or assisting with the canoeing groups.
“He regularly introduces young people to the sport, although he is equally successful coaching experienced paddlers. He does a lot more than coaching, tackling the routine tasks of a club and one-off exciting projects with equal enthusiasm. His ‘warm and welcoming personality and his capacity to be the first to offer to help are exceptional characteristics in a young person.
“Pam Dixon has been volunteering in the club for nearly 20 years. She is the club secretary, a club coach and she helps out with much of the organisation so that the club runs smoothly. She has been instrumental in helping the club to gain Clubmark status and Top Club, which are two significant awards.”
Alun Jones, club chairman said, ‘It is fantastic to see these two people who give so much to the club being recognised for what they do.
“We currently have a large number of volunteers in the club and we are very grateful for what they do on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis. Our club would not be as successful as it is, without all the help we get, and I would like to thank everyone who is involved at Frome Canoe Club.”
