HUNDREDS of runners completed the first ever Frome half marathon and 10k race, despite the scorching weather.
Organisers are hailing the event as a huge success as the Frome community packed out the streets to lend their support.
International rugby star, Jeremy Guscott, set the runners of both races off from Frome Football Club on Sunday 22nd of July at 11am, after a slight delay.
The winner of the first Frome half marathon was Michael Hiscott, from Maindenhead Athletic Club, who completed the course in 1 hour 15 minutes and 36 seconds. Oliver Thwaites, from Road Runners Club, won the 10k with a time of 35 minutes, 37.6 seconds.
The event was organised by Frome Running Club and Frome Rotary Club.
Mike Cole, from the Rotary Club commented, “We are absolutely delighted with the success of the event.
“On the first ‘summer’s day’ of the year, great support was given by the people of Frome who did the event proud, coming onto the streets to cheer the runners along as they made their way around the course. The smiling faces of people cheering and urging them on was really encouraging in the 25-degrees heat. Some of the supporters were spraying water at the runners to cool them down.
“The feedback from those running in this inaugural event was wholly positive, despite the hard route.
“David Heath presented trophies to the first three male and female runners in both races and also to the age group winners.
“Runners and the official observers from UK Athletics praised the sponsors, marshalls and race organisation, giving the event the thumbs up and calling for it to become an annual event. So please look out for the Frome Half Marathon 2013.”
