Four local water power projects will be offering free tours as part of Frome Open Homes on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th October.
Two existing projects, at Hapsford near Great Elm, and Tellisford will be offering guided tours of their systems which generate enough power to cover all of Great Elm’s electricity needs.
Other projects which are in the pipeline include Wadbury at Fussels Mill in Vallis Vale which Rajan Russell is renovating to re-instate the site’s hydro powered past. The other is at Spring Gardens where Kevin Sharpe is preparing for an 80kw hydro system at the site of the previous water mill. Up until the 1950s, the water mill powered a pump which transported water to Lullington.
Organiser Anna Francis said, “As well as showcasing what people are doing in their homes to cut carbon and costs, we also wanted to include these fascinating renewable energy projects which will power local homes and reduce emissions. It’s a chance to link back with Frome’s water-powered heritage.”
Alongside the hydro projects, 20 homes will be opening their doors demonstrating a range of measures, from solid wall insulation to draught-proofing to new eco builds to seventeenth century refurbs.
Laura Parry who is also helping to organise the event said, “All of the visits are free but the hydro tours and some of the home tours require pre-booking. Last year some homes booked up quickly so it’s worth checking the guide and website as soon as you can to reserve your place.”
