STAFF at The Griffin on Frome’s Milk Street have thanked the community for its support after two charity boxes were stolen from the pub last week.
In the early hours of Monday 4th July a thief gained access to The Griffin and stole the two full charity boxes.
Fortunately they were caught on CCTV and the police are investigating the incident. The money was being raised for the Black Swan Arts and the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group (BCUSG).
Rik Lyall, owner of The Griffin and Milk Street Brewery said, “This was a despicable act, but I would like to thank the local community for all their help and support.”
Martin Bax, collector for BCUSG, discovered the theft. He said “I was devastated and sickened that somebody had stolen the charity boxes; it must be the lowest of the low crime. Although BCUSG has already paid £1.2 million towards a new Positron scanner for the RUH, the NHS has asked the charity to raise another £85,000 for technical and safety equipment for the staff.”
The new Positron scanner is a state of the art machine used for the early detection of cancer – find out more at www.bcusg.org. The Griffin has raised around £5,700 towards the scanner in the past eight years.
Tino Polledri, vice chairman of the BCUSG said, “We are immensely grateful to Rik Lyall and his team at The Griffin and to Milk Street Brewery for all the help and support they have given the charity over the years.”
The Black Swan is as a leading contemporary art gallery in Frome, which relies on donations to continue its work – find out more at www.blackswan.org.uk The collection boxes have been reinstalled at the pub with tighter security.
