THE fundraising group, Team Bones, continue their money-raising journey for Bone Cancer Research Trust. Team Bones was set up by Filipa Vance, who has been cancer-free for 30 years.
Filipa was diagnosed at the age of 15 with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. She has remained a cancer patient for 25 years and was formally discharged four years ago. Nearly 30 years on from her initial diagnosis, Filipa is cancer-free, but still lives with the emotional and physical effects of cancer; receiving ongoing treatment for a titanium bone prosthesis in her right leg.
Filipa, alongside friends and family have been taking part in challenges, raffles and events to raise as much money for the Bone Cancer Research Trust as possible.
Speaking to Frome Times, Filipa updated the paper on the group’s efforts.
“We held a jumble sale in September which raised an amazing £823.47 which Barclays Bank kindly matched, making the total go to £1,646.94.
“It was a huge effort, friends and family all came together to help out on the day. We were truly humbled by the support we got from the community who came to buy, chat, have cake and drink a cuppa.
“Also Team Bones has grown! Paul Kirtley organised an acoustic-plugged gig at the Three Swans on the 30th November with an open mic.
“Also, Karl Horler from Frome Reclamation yard has put together a calendar of his hilarious photos around the yard that are always well received by all on the Frome FB page. Karl is selling the calendars for £7, with £5 going to Bone Cancer Research Trust.
“It really is truly humbling. I’m yet to meet Karl but it is lovely to see people from all walks of life coming together for this cause, so important to many.
“We were also contacted by Frome FM and did a little interview about the importance of fundraising and living beyond cancer. My kids were amazing and almost reduced me to tears.
“As things stand, we have raised £4,769.79 but we won’t stop here! My husband and two of my friends will be running the London Marathon in April, so we are hoping to just keep going.”
