FROME Walking Football Club celebrate going unbeaten in their first tournament and ask that new players give the sport a go.
The club says, “Frome Walking Football Club started six months ago and has attracted a regular team of players. Recently, on Thursday 14th February, they played successfully in their first tournament, organised by the Somerset FA and played at Yeovil. The team managed to hold their own, not losing a match against the more experienced opposing teams from all parts of Somerset.
“Walking Football was created in 2011 and has turned out to be a popular and growing format of the game, with now over 1,100 clubs registered in the UK.
“It is aimed at the over 50s, being a slower paced version of the beautiful game. It is more like five-a-side than 11-a-side football. The main rule is no running – if you run, you give away a free kick!
“Walking football is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle and get back into playing. It is a great way to keep fit, learn new skills, have fun and socialise all at the same time. There are leagues for over 50s and over 60s, and local, national and international tournaments are played.
“Frome Walking Football play at 6pm on Thursday evenings on the pitch at Frome Sports Centre. New players are always welcome, come and give it a go!”
