Children at Hayesdown First School took part in a Power Down Day recently to help reduce the school’s carbon footprint.
On the day, children and staff were encouraged to reduce energy consumption by turning off unnecessary lights and electronic devices. In addition, the school’s eco team worked with the caretaker, Tom Roughley, to understand how the school’s heating works and turned the thermostat down for the day.
Power Down Day is promoted by Energy Sparks, a group that advises schools on how to become more energy efficient, aims to raise awareness about energy conservation and promotes eco-friendly practices among children, staff and the wider community.
Hayesdown First School is an eco-school and currently holds the top Green Flag award. The eco team, led by Alice Watts, is passionate about helping the environment and learning about how to be responsible in looking after the planet for their future. They were fully involved in planning the event for the school and spent Power Down Day checking that classrooms were as energy efficient as possible by carrying out monitoring every 30 minutes.
Headteacher Julia Battersby said, “This event is a fantastic opportunity for our school community to come together and make a positive impact on the environment. By powering down, we can demonstrate our commitment to sustainable practices and inspire others to do the same.”
