FOLLOWING the Grand Slam success of British teenager, Emma Raducanu, in the US Open this month, Frome Tennis Club is on the hunt for the next breakout tennis star.
Frome Tennis Club chairman, Mark Brierley, reports, “The performance of Emma Raducanu in New York was fantastic; a brilliant demonstration of power and athleticism, with the spirit and bottle to close the match out with an ace. She is exceptional, a ‘dream come true’ story, but she also shows that talent and commitment can work miracles.
“Tennis is often described as the ‘best’ sport for general health and fitness. It is a great cardio work out, is fairly injury free, good for body and mind, social, can be played by all ages 4 to 94, and there is a friendly club on the doorstep ready to welcome you.
“The Frome Tennis Club is located at the Mary Baily playing field next to Victoria Park and manages six courts with options for membership, season ticket or simple pay-to-play. Have a look at our club website for details: https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/ FromeSelwoodTennisClub
“The club coach is Stephen Marcelle and his Tennis Academy is based at the club. Stephen is passionate about tennis and keen to find local talent and give them the opportunity to shine.
“Emma Raducanu is the perfect role model and Stephen wants to know if the next ‘Emma’ is out there in Frome. Stephen is hoping to visit all the schools in Frome to offer an experience of tennis and to identify young talent and is offering some free introductory coaching sessions.
“There are also free lessons through the club’s ‘Reaching Out’ scheme, where children from low income families who receive the pupil premium at school qualify for free club membership and free coaching.”
The free ‘Introduction to Tennis for Juniors (5-12)’ is held on Tuesdays, 4pm to 5pm. Sessions began this week and run for another three weeks.
The club continues, “Stephen also believes tennis is the ‘best’ sport and he encourages anyone to give it a try. One of the most successful recent initiatives at the club has been two bounce tennis for those that need a more gentle workout.
“Emma has probably inspired everyone and if you feel inspired enough to give tennis a try then how about coming along to a month’s free introductory adult coaching sessions on Mondays, 6pm to 7pm. Introduction to Tennis for Adults began this week and runs for a further three sessions.”
