Russell Ford from 1st and 7th Jubilee Frome Scouts has recently been selected to go the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden.
This massive event will be held during the summer of 2011. This once in a lifetime opportunity will have Scouts from nearly every country in the world and will be the home of 40 to 50,000 Scouts for 10 days.
Russell had to do many challenges to get this far. He went through two selection phases; one was a one day event in Tedbury camp and the other a two night camp at Huish Woods near Taunton. He was set typical scout challenges like putting up a tent and showing how many knots he knew as well as more modern activities including team building challenges.
Russell was marked on teamwork, leadership and how well he performed the tasks. The Jamboree will give him the chance to learn the skills which will stay with him for the rest of his life and he already plans to have a career based in the environment. Russell has been involved with Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from the age of six and is currently a Young Leader in 1st and 7th Jubilee Scout Beaver group.
Russell’s next challenge in order to get to Sweden is to raise £1800 and he is organising a series of fund-raising events throughout the coming months.
Forthcoming events include a quiz night which is kindly being hosted at the Mason’s Arms, Marston Gate on Sunday 4th July beginning at 7.30 pm.
Russell is also looking for sponsorship towards this adventure and would be delighted to hear from anyone who feels they could support him with this.
