With World War 1 centenary commemorations this year, Frome will be coming together more than ever for remembrance, with installations and events in and around the town, in theatres, schools, churches and arts venues, which will bring to mind those who left and never returned, in body or mind, including the families.
As part of the commemorations Merlin Theatre Productions are staging R.C. Sherriff’s “Journey’s End” from 18th-20th October. Set in the trenches near Saint-Quentin, Aisne in 1918, towards the end of the First World War, Journey’s End gives a glimpse into the experiences of the officers of a British Army infantry company. The story plays out in the officers’ dugout over four days from 18th March 1918 to 21st March 1918, the last few days before Operation Michael.
R.C.Sherriff’s classic war drama leaves us in no doubt about man’s ability to destroy, and man’s capacity for courage.
During the run, the RBL and Help for Heroes will be in the foyer to publicise the support given to the armed forces community today.
Tickets cost £12.50 (£10.50) and are available from merlintheatre.co.uk or call 01373 465949.
A Day of Opera and Ballet
On 24th October, music lovers can choose between a screening of the Royal Ballet’s production of Mayerling (choreographer Kenneth MacMillan; music, Franz Liszt) in the afternoon or Saint-Saëns’s opera Samson and Delilah from the New York Met in the evening – or maybe both!
