music therapist, Liz Coombes, will be talking in Frome on Friday 7th November, as guest of Frome Friends of Palestine.
Liz, who runs the MA course in music therapy at the University of South Wales, has been working in Palestine since 2009, delivering training for teachers and social workers in how the therapeutic use of music can enrich the lives of those in their care.
Liz manages projects for two charities in Palestine: Music as Therapy International and Sounds of Palestine. MTI runs introductory training projects for local care staff, equipping them with materials and skills so that they can run their own programmes.
Sounds of Palestine run community music projects inspired by the Venezuelan El Sistema scheme. Children learn to play instruments in primary school programmes. Teachers, nurses and social workers gain skills in musical leadership, allowing programmes to continue.
With photos, short film clips and some thought-provoking views, Liz’s experiences show a different side of Palestine and Palestinians as they struggle for self-determination and creative expression.
Liz’s talk on Friday 7th November commences at 7.30pm and will be held at the South Parade Club, 7A South Parade, Frome (BA11 1EJ) £3 entry, proceeds to these two charities.
