New greenery at the Cheese & Grain

Six new birch trees have been planted outside the Cheese and Grain in Frome, after the venue received a National Lottery grant to purchase the trees.

Cheese and Grain staff and volunteers were joined by Green Party councillors, candidates and supporters last Friday, to plant the trees, sustained by tea and cake from the Cheese and Grain cafe.

The containers are ‘green’ too – they are made from reclaimed water tanks – and the soil was supplied by local company FABS. The ‘Snow Queen’ birch trees are a variety particularly recommended for containers.

Pepita Collins, Chair of the Cheese and Grain, and Green Party county council candidate for Frome North said, “It’s wonderful to be able to be able to provide some greenery to improve the car park area, which will look better and better as the trees mature over the next several years.”

John Clarke, who is standing as Green candidate in Frome West, added, “Urban green spaces are so important for our well-being, and we have a superb space along the river, a stone’s throw from the Cheese and Grain. We’re very happy to help out with greening the concrete space on the other side of the building too.”
