A NEW independent music label with the aim of supporting local musical talent has been launched in Frome.
Adderwell Music has been set up by Toby Cann, Andrew May and Jen May, all local Frome residents, who are keen to support musicians offering something new and different.
Innovative music lies at the heart of Adderwell and they are keen to give musicians the opportunity to showcase their work and help support them with the distribution of their music.
Andrew May, told Frome Times, “We aim to promote new ideas in music, alternative creative pathways across the spectrum from grass roots to avant garde. Set to feature folk, electronic and left field acts, locally and far flung, the label aims to focus on traditional and current musical styles and emerging music forms”.
They have recently completed their first album launch for a contemporary classical quartet, ‘Spindle Ensemble.’
Co-founder Toby Cann added, “We are motivated by a belief that there is a fear with dominant music sounds that come out of the music industry, which is so synthetic and autotuned with songs written to sell, rather than created because music is a beautiful thing.
“We really want to give life and support music that is really authentic and written from a place of creativity, rather than it being formulaic.
“We are based here in Frome, in Adderwell, the name of the label, so it matters to us to help local artists. However, we don’t see this as being just a local thing; we are openminded and will look internationally, explore what is going on globally. It definitely matters to me that we can support local artists that share a similar mindset, creating music that is unique and written because of the love of the process and less about making music for commercial benefit.
“The music industry is in a funny place right now and begs the question of what could a small kitchen table record label really do for independent artists. We are not motivated by profit but we definitely want to help launch artists into the industry and hopefully they can make a living from it.
“We might take a bit longer to do some things compared to international labels, but we want to get them right and we want to let the artists do their own thing”
