FROME’s new Mayor, cllr Toby Eliot, is to lead a high-heeled walk to raise awareness of violence against women.
Men are being asked to join him to walk a mile in high heel shoes to raise funds and awareness for the White Ribbon Campaign.
The “High Heel Walk” challenge is taking place on Sunday 3rd July at The Frome Independent and local men are being asked to walk in women’s shoes on a special course around the monthly market.
The charity walk is being organised by Engaging Women, a group of Frome women set up to increase female participation in the town.
Founding member and Frome town councillor, Kate Bielby, said she had been deeply affected to learn that on average two women are killed per week as a direct result of domestic violence in the UK.
She said, “Of course, we know that most men are not violent towards women, but we all have a role in addressing this worrying statistic. So men of Frome, take part in this special walk to raise awareness and show your solidarity with women by literally putting yourself in their shoes!”
Mayor of Frome, cllr Toby Eliot said “I’m very happy to take part in this great campaign. We’re looking for as many male participants as possible – the more the merrier!”
The walk will begin at the Market Place stage at The Frome Independent at 12pm and end at the pop-up Village Green.
All proceeds raised will go towards the White Ribbon Campaign, a national charity set up by a group of men to end violence against women.
The Frome Independent is delighted to be able to host The Heel Walk, and have a stock of large size high heel shoes that can be hired for a £3 donation by emailing the market team on admin@thefromeindependent.org.uk
Many of Frome’s charity shops are putting aside larger sizes of ladies’ shoes for men to purchase especially for the walk.
