OAKFIELD Academy has received The Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM) in recognition of excellence in teaching and learning in geography.
The academy says, “The SGQM is a prestigious award which recognises quality and progress in geography leadership, curriculum development and learning and teaching in schools. All the award winners undergo a rigorous moderation process, and the team of assessors were hugely impressed by the manner in which the team at Oakfield Academy continues to embrace new and innovative approaches to help the pupils in their learning.
Assistant headteacher, David McGrath said, “There has really never been a more important time for young people to learn about the global community. Growing up in the 21st Century means living in an increasingly interconnected world, one facing a growing number of global challenges such as climate change and the need to live our lives sustainably.
“The way geography is taught at the academy allows pupils the opportunity to really learn at a high level, it fascinates and inspires them to become global citizens.”
Year 8 pupil, Sophie Thomas, commented, “The learning is relevant to what we as young people experience and that really helps us learn. We are also able to apply the skills in other lessons like maths and English, which helps us with our confidence.”
