FROME woman Wendy Jones, along with 13 others, will be cycling around Central America to raise money for Macmillan.
This is Wendy’s third cycling challenge, having cycled from London to Paris in 2013 and Vietnam to Cambodia in 2014 with the aim to raise £10,000 for her favourite charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.
Wendy said, “I had such an amazing experience on the last two trips and met so many lovely people all raising money for different charities, but all with similar stories and reasons to take on these challenges.
“I decided to take on the challenge in memory of my aunt, Carol Wase. Macmillan provided outstanding care to both my aunt and family – meaning she could stay at home throughout her illness. This is my way of saying thank you to all that provided such loving care.”
The trip will start soon from Panama, then through Costa Rica and on to Nicaragua. Wendy’s trip will see her cover 420 miles in 8 days.
Wendy said, “Central America is home to over 20% of the world’s biodiversity. Its chain of volcanic mountains joins North and South America and the Panama canals connecting the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean.
“We will cycle through banana and pineapple plantations, taking in stunning Caribbean coastal scenery, pass smoking volcanoes and climb through primary rainforest.
“It will be an amazing trip but there is no forgetting that it is a challenge and that it will be early mornings, late evenings, cycling miles in the heat, dust, monsoons and rough terrain, to raise as much as possible.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me and the charity with donations, purchasing the odd bag of sweets (or two), a cycling and open garden day and for the encouraging words that will help me when I runs out of energy, and jelly beans just don’t work!”
