The new format to the Seniors Championship at Orchardleigh Golf Club – now played over two rounds – saw last year’s champion, Paul Lewis, successfully defend his title with a total of 151, a magnificent nine shots ahead of Rod Jelly in second place.
Paul’s scores were good enough to also take second place in the nett competition (74 and 77 minus his handicap of 5 making a total net of 141). In first place for nett score over the two days, winning the Mike Small Trophy was Brian Brookes, playing off 12, who scored a brilliant 77 on day one (65 nett) and 84 (72 nett) on day two to win by four shots. Brian also won the Phil Jefferies Trophy for best nett on day one, while the John Scott Trophy, for best nett on day two went to Paul Moakes (85 nett 68).
Seniors Captain, Pete Maunder, presented the prizes with some sadness as Mike Small, who had given the trophy for the overall nett winner, sadly passed away last week. Alf Edmundson, another long standing Senior golfer at Orchardleigh also passed away last week. Both will be long, and fondly, remembered.
Results: Seniors Champion – Paul Lewis (151); Runner Up – Rod Jelly (160). Mike Small Trophy (Best nett overall) – Brian Brookes (137 nett); Runner Up – Paul Lewis (141 nett). Phil Jefferies Trophy (Nett day one) – Brian Brookes (65). John Scott Trophy (net day two) – Paul Moakes (68)
