A LOCAL aid group will be collecting donations for refugees in Calais this weekend, at a fundraising day at Silk Mill.
Refugee Response East Somerset will be holding a one-day event and collection this Saturday 30th January, from 10.30am to 2pm, at the gallery on Vicarage Lane.
The group is collecting small clothing items for men living in refugee camps in Calais. Hats, scarves, gloves, and new underwear and socks are the only things being collected at this event.
Organiser Kate McEwan said, “We can’ change the wintry weather for the 6,000+ people stuck in the cold, muddy ‘jungle’ in Calais, but sometimes it’s the small things that make a big difference.
“Donations have to be small items for men only, until we have somewhere in Frome to store and sort larger items and a wider variety of clothing. All offers of spaces we could borrow for a few weeks are very welcome!
“Even if they have no small items to donate, we do ask that people give support by coming along to enjoy a variety of hot drinks, homemade soup and cake, buy a raffle ticket, get the kids’ faces painted and browse our stalls selling everything from bargain books to designer jewellery, handbags, soft furnishings and herbal potions and lotions.”
