RESIDENTS of Trinity Row have praised the work of Somerset County Council to restore one of the historic ‘Cockey lamps’ to its former glory after it was replaced with a modern-style lamp, not in keeping with the area’s heritage.
Made in the early 19th Century by the Cockey family, ‘Cockey lamps’, which are dotted around the town, are considered to be an important part of Frome’s heritage.
When one of the lamps in the conservation area of Trinity Row was replaced with a modern-style lamp earlier in the year, residents were quick to complain. However, much to their relief, Somerset County Council agreed to reinstate the original bracket with an appropriate heritage style lantern.
Local, Dulcie Muir said, “I cannot praise Phil Green, senior lighting engineer at Somerset County Council, more highly in his professionalism and concern following the removal of which was so upsetting to us in our conservation area.
“He was thorough and so clearly interested in the reinstatement of such a piece of important street furniture. Quite impressive during these times.”
