East Woodlands Village Hall  will be holding another of their popular winter ‘Soup and Pud’ on Saturday 16th February.

Lunches are from 12.00 noon and only cost £5 for warming home-made soup and a fantastic range of puds.  Call 462963 or 466685

  • Rare daytime otter sightings reported in Frome. A local wildlife enthusiast has reported rare daytime sightings of otters in Frome. Local resident Tony, who runs the Frome Area Wildlife Group on Facebook and is a member of the Somerset Otter Group, said the daytime sightings are ‘extremely rare’ and are a sign the animals are becoming used to humans. “If you are an otter fanatic like me, it is something you have dreamed of. You can imagine my joy of seeing them in the day,” he said. Tony monitors otters around the town and took over surveying for the Frome area for the Somerset Otter Group. “I started to put out cameras about 10 years ago and to my great joy, I have got some fantastic shots,” said Tony. “I now run two or three cameras at various locations.” Read more on our website.   • Join this year’s Potato Day and Seed Swap. Frome Potato Day and Seed Swap is back this year, providing residents with all the essentials to get the growing season underway. The event on Sunday 15th February at the Cheese and Grain will run from 10am to 2pm, offering seed potatoes, bulbs, seeds, plants, fruit trees and the community seed swap. Organisers, Frome Field 2 Fork CIC say, “Bring your excess seeds in clearly marked paper envelopes and plants to swap for exciting new varieties. “The intention is to inspire and encourage people to nurture their own green spaces and to share ways we can better take care of our environment as a community: sharing regenerative practices, creative explorations of our local food systems, deepening connections with herbal medicines and delicious food demonstrations.” Read more on our website.   • Friendship club thrives with 100 members. A social group providing space for people aged over 50 in Frome is thriving with 100 members. The Frome and District Friendship Club started in 1999 and meets in the Assembly Rooms, behind the Memorial Theatre. Chairman Pete Dayman-Johns said the group is ‘thriving’ and continues to welcome people aged 50 plus to meet new friends and enjoy a lunch for the cost of £12. The group also runs regular events, including bingo and coach trips to destinations such as Weymouth, Exeter, Bournemouth and Poole. Pete said, “Although people don’t have to be lonely to come, anyone can attend from anywhere, not just Frome. It’s a great way to meet new friends or just enjoy a nice dinner, pudding and a cup of tea. “Disability access is also no problem for anyone with disabilities or access needs.” The group meets from 11am to 3.30pm on Mondays and from 11am to 1.30pm on Thursdays.   • Book shop hosts ‘for love of books’ event with bestselling author A book-themed evening with bestselling author Libby Page is set to be hosted by a Frome book shop. Winstone’s Hunting Raven Books is hosting an event at The Assembly Rooms on Thursday 12th February. There will be a discussion with Libby Page about her new novel, ‘This Book Made Me Think of You’ and what it’s like to run an independent bookshop.   • School pays tribute ‘passionate and dedicated’ teacher A tribute has been paid to a much-loved maths teacher at Selwood Academy who died last month. Andrew March, who died on 25th January from cancer, was a teacher for 27 years and worked at Selwood Academy for eight years. He was known for his infectious enthusiasm for mathematics, his love of sport, and his infamous collection of over 200 ties. The school flew its flag at half-mast in his honour. A tribute issued by Selwood Academy said, “Andrew was not just someone who worked in this school; he was someone who helped shape it. As a passionate and dedicated mathematics teacher, Andrew brought an infectious energy, clarity, and genuine enthusiasm to his subject. His love for problem-solving extended far beyond the classroom, reflecting a rare talent for untangling complexity and making mathematics accessible and engaging for every pupil. “Sport was a very big part of Andrew’s life and that of his family; wife Nichola and his two sons Rory and Will."   • Strong start for cancer charity’s urgent fundraising appeal Frome-based cancer counselling charity We Hear You (WHY) has raised 24% of an urgent appeal to keep the charity open. WHY needs to raise £55,000 by 31st March or it faces the risk of closure. It has so far raised £13,500 since the appeal launched at the start of the year. The charity, based on North Parade, works across the region, offering counselling to people living with cancer and other life-threatening conditions, as well as family members, close friends and those who have been bereaved. Chief Executive Officer of WHY, Lucy Kitchener, said, “Thanks to the generosity of our community, we’ve now reached 24% of our £55,000 target – an encouraging start, but we still have a long way to go to secure the future of WHY’s free and low-cost specialist support for people affected by cancer and life-changing conditions.” Read more on our website.   • Rotary and Lions raise over £19,000 for local causes. More than £19,000 has been raised for local causes by Frome Lions and Rotary’s Santa Float during the festive period. The 50-year-old tradition saw volunteers make 21 trips on 17 nights and three afternoons over the three weeks running up to Christmas, visiting Frome and surrounding villages while facing heavy rain and high winds. The float travelled 75 miles across its route, with the 100 volunteers involved walking more than 1,100 miles in total. This year’s collection set a record of over £19,000, with 12.5% coming from contactless and online donations. The funds will be used by Rotary and Lions to support welfare and community projects in and around Frome. Richard Lines, President of Frome Rotary, which celebrated its centenary last year, said, “In the 100th year of Rotary in Frome, it is fantastic that Santa’s long-running traditional visit to Frome goes from strength to strength. With over 100 volunteers coming out from Rotary and Lions, we were delighted to be joined by staff from Rotary’s new Corporate Member, Wainwright’s, as well as other groups from around Frome.” Read more on our website.   • Kindness Festival to return for fifth year. Frome’s Kindness Festival will return in March for a fifth year, inviting the community to eight days of fun, creativity and connection. Led by The Good Heart, the festival is set to run from Saturday 14th to Saturday 21st March with music, poetry, talks, exhibitions, walks, workshops and joyful gatherings, creating space for connection, reflection and hope all through a prism of kindness. This year, the festival is also teaming up with Window Wanderland, transforming the town with a week of colourful window displays inspired by the theme of ‘Hope’, turning Frome’s streets into a shared canvas of optimism and imagination.   • Submissions open for Frome film festival. Film makers are being invited to enter the Frome International Climate Film Festival, which is now in its fifth year. The festival is welcoming submissions from Somerset and the South West as well as films from around the world. Entries close on 12th February. Director and festival creator James Godman said, “We are looking for films to inform, to inspire, to educate and to help people to change and to engage with nature and the environment.
