Spectacularly entertaining socially-distanced programme of events at the Merlin

FOLLOWING a successful summer of entertainment, The Merlin theatre, Frome’s much-loved community venue, has announced its programme for October with Covid-safe procedures to ensure the comfort and safety of all.

The theatre report, “After full instruction and training with all volunteers and staff, director Claudia Pepler-White and operations manager, Kaz Bold, have already overseen three successful indoor shows and the theatre’s new systems are now robustly in place to house five further events this October.

“Starting with Matthew Bourne’s ‘The Red Shoes’ on Thursday 1st October, filmed live at Sadler’s Wells earlier this year, the 240 -seat theatre will operate with a reduced, safe-seated capacity in the region of approximately only 60-70 patrons (depending upon the number of booked ‘bubbles’). This will allow the organisation to firmly retain pre-determined spaces for all groups and individuals during the performances, as well as on entry and exit.

“Music-lovers will be delighted to catch an afternoon screening of world-famous Andre Rieu’s Magical Maastricht concerts on 4th October and then, back together, West End stars Michael Ball and Alfie Boe will fill the theatre with their voices from London’s O2 with time-choices to view on both 17th and 18th October.

“Theatre lovers need to book their tickets quickly to grab a seat for a re-run of the wonderful broadcast stage show of ‘Fleabag’  with the amazing Phoebe Waller-Bridge; Chekhov enthusiasts will not want to miss, filmed at the Harold Pinter theatre this August during lockdown, the critically-acclaimed Sonia Friedman production of ‘Uncle Vanya’.

“Comedy-lovers also have a treat in store as the theatre plans an announcement for some great laughs coming up in October too.  You heard it here first!

“All tickets must be booked in advance and face-covering are required inside the building. Full details of times, prices and tickets are at www.merlintheatre.co.uk

  • Frome’s teenage superbike star competes on national stage

A teenage superbike rider from Frome is making waves on the national stage as he competes in the British Superteen Championship - the country’s premier superbike racing series for young riders.
17-year-old Casey Sparey has been racing since the age of four and is now competing in the championship which shines a light on the stars of tomorrow and gives young riders, aged between 15 and 20, a chance to race in front of huge crowds at the best circuits in the UK. This season, Casey has already competed at Oulton Park in Cheshire, and Donington Park in Leicestershire and is currently preparing for the next round of the championship, set to take place this Saturday 22nd June at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk.

  • Sisters’ fundraising mission raises over £3,000 for cancer support

Two sisters from Frome and a team of friends have raised over £3,000 for a local cancer support charity by cycling from Frome to the Royal United Hospital (RUH), and completing equivalent laps of the Old Showfield. Esme Spicer, seven, and Olivia Spicer, 12, took on the challenge alongside friends and dads to raise funds for the charity that supported Esme when she was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma – a type of sarcoma cancer that affects the skeletal muscles – in August 2021, just before her fourth birthday. The money raised will go to the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group, a small charity run entirely by volunteers which supports the work of cancer services at the RUH in Bath.
“They do brilliant things for both children’s and adult cancer care in Bath and the surrounding areas,” said the girls’ mum, Anne Spicer. “This includes funding a paediatric oncology nurse who can visit children in the community so they can spend more time at home just being children.”
With the support of the charity, Esme’s treatment has included chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery at the RUH and Bristol Children’s Hospital.

It follows an extraordinary meeting of Frome Town Council on Wednesday 18th June, where councillors voted to leave the door open for a revised plan that offered clearer and more guaranteed community benefits.

  • Spotlight on local housing – Building Social Homes, a moral and social responsibility

A column by Frome Area Community Land Trust

To live in a safe, secure home is a basic human right; we all need a decent, affordable place to call home – it’s the foundation for our lives.

A recognised route out of poverty is living in a social rented home. Social homes are deliberately more affordable than private rented homes and provide a more secure, long-term way for people to put down roots and be part of their community.

That’s why we need to do our bit in Frome to support plans for building more social homes.

  • Frome’s oldest charity launches tricentennial fundraiser for vital building repairs

Frome’s oldest charity, The Blue House, has launched a fundraiser to help pay for essential structural repairs to its 300-year-old iconic almshouse in the heart of Frome.

The Grade I-listed The Blue House on The Bridge was built between 1725 and 1728 and has been providing affordable accommodation for the town’s elderly men and women since 1482.

To mark its tricentennial anniversary, trustees have launched an appeal to raise £500,000 to cover structural repairs, including work on the windows, external stonework and roof.

A special evening drinks party was held at The Blue House last month to launch the fundraiser. The event was sponsored by Mogers Drewett LLP, Southwick Wines, an anonymous donor, and Guy and Lady Monson.

  • Lions visit air ambulance base following successful fundraiser

Frome Lions were recently invited to visit the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance base, following their successful Charity Sporting Dinner which raised £26,000 for the charity.

During their visit, the Lions saw the helicopter and the vital equipment the air ambulance carries. There was also an emergency call for help and the Lions saw at close range the helicopter taking off on its mission.

“Shortly afterwards, it was stood down and returned to base,” said Lion, Mike Geake. “Earlier during the visit, the pilot had said that the policy was always for the air ambulance to launch as soon as possible after getting a call and, if circumstances changed, they would abort the flight.”
