Frome Symphony will be giving two performances in the Cheese and Grain on Sunday 10th February, at 4pm.
The orchestra will be joined by the acclaimed musical educator, Julie Payne, to play orchestral excerpts from music by Berlioz and Sibelius, in a fun concert for the whole family. This is particularly suitable for children from the age of 5 upwards and includes an introduction to the instruments of the orchestra. Tickets are £5.
In the eventing, at 7.30pm, Frome Symphony will be joined by Guildhall graduate and Frome resident Luke Norland, who will perform the beautiful concerto for French horn by Reinhold Gliere.
The concert’s opening work is the Valse Triste by Sibelius, a beautifully melodic piece which invokes the dreams of a dying woman, and remains one of the composer’s most popular works. The second half of the concert is devoted to a full performance of Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, which is subtitled “An Episode in the Life of an Artist, in Five Parts”. Leonard Bernstein famously described the symphony as the first musical expedition into psychedelia because of its hallucinatory and dream-like nature. According to Bernstein, “Berlioz tells it like it is. You take a trip, you wind up screaming at your own funeral.” Tickets for the evening concert are £12 (adult) and £5 (under 18).
