A FROME man is planning to walk from Lisbon in Portugal to Santiago in Spain, a distance of 382 miles, for charity.
Terry Burton who works for Hanover Association as an Estate Manager at Hanover Gardens in Frome is walking the route for the Alzheimer’s Society and hopes to raise £500.
“I am sure we know someone who has been afflicted by this terrible disease and I have personally known people who have suffered,” said Terry.
With his 60th birthday approaching at the end of August, Terry felt the need to mark the occasion. “I wanted to challenge myself and as this is a significant birthday I wanted to do something that was personally special. My wife is coming out to join me at the end in Santiago”
The route Terry will be taking is one of the many Camino routes across Europe that lead to the city of Santiago de Compostella in Spain.
The Camino routes are pilgrimage routes to the city of Santiago where the apostle St James is said to be buried. People walk for many reasons, including as a personal challenge, religious reasons, or to remember somebody.
Terry walked the Camino Frances four years ago and went after seeing the film ‘The Way’ with Martin Sheen.
Terry sets off on his journey on Friday 1st September and he hopes to complete the walk in six weeks.
