Frome District, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides took part in a bake off competition to raise money for Big Ted RUH appeal on Sunday 18th October.

In the morning the Guides rose to the challenge of the unknown Technical bake (Swiss roll) and their own Signature bake (a tart of their choice).

Guides embraced on the technical bake, creating impressive results. The judges had a tough decision to make to crown the top Technical bake, which went to Emily Chapman and Natalie Howell from 3rd Frome Guides.

Meanwhile they were making the Signature bake, there were Bakewell tarts, chocolate tarts, and fruits tarts; the judges gave the top marks to Isabel Jones and Sophie Hancock from 4th Frome Guides with an amazing Lemon tart.

In the afternoon, Guides were selected to go through to the afternoon round. Rainbows and Brownies joined in with the competition with a fairy cake completion. There was a range of flavours and decoration.  Each participant cooked their cakes from scratch, producing promising results.

The winner of the Fairy cupcakes went to Jessica Meadows with a Hedgehog fairy cake design from 2nd Frome Rainbows, Amelia Preston Jackson from 4th Frome Brownies with a Minion cake design and Maddy Noding and Summer Vowells with a Popcorn creation cup cake from 4th Frome Guides.

The organisers said, “After the competition was over we had a visit from Big Ted, parents, family and friends came to ample the cakes and buy raffle tickets and refreshments. All money went to the Big Teds Bake Off and we raised £171.00.

“All of the participants had an enjoyable experience with minimal disasters. There were some amazing results.  Well done to all that participated. A huge thank you to all the leaders for all of your hard work. A special thank you to the Trefoil Guild who came along to help and see what the girls had been up to. Thank you to the judges for making those tough decisions.”

If anyone would like to become involved in Girlguiding please contact Penny on 07738 350537. Even if it’s just an hour or two each month or every now and again you are more than welcome.

  • Rotary clubs help fund new goalposts

Three new goalposts have been installed at Frome Town United Football Club, thanks to support from two Rotary clubs in Frome.

The new goalposts have been jointly funded by the Football Foundation, along with donations from the Rotary Club of Frome and Frome Town Rotary Clubs, to support access to football for the club’s youngest players, aged 12 and under, across 19 teams, including three girls-only teams.

Frome Town United Chairperson Shaun White said, “We’re hugely grateful to the Frome Rotary Clubs for their generosity. These new goals will directly benefit hundreds of children, especially our younger age groups, and help us continue to grow inclusive football for boys and girls across the town.”

  • Frome Home Bargains store approved

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

A discount retailer will be coming to Frome and creating more than 100 local jobs after plans were approved by local councillors.

Home Bargains has been given full planning permission by Somerset Council, to be developed on commercial land near Frome’s Sainsbury’s, despite local concerns about traffic congestion on the neighbouring roads.

Mendip District Council granted outline planning permission in July 2020 for 235 homes and commercial premises either side of Sandys Hill Lane, near the town’s Sainsbury’s supermarket and McDonald’s drive-thru among other businesses.

  • Residents encouraged to support Frome this Christmas

Residents are being encouraged to shop locally this Christmas and support businesses in Frome to boost the local economy.

From buying Christmas cards, toys, home décor, plants, perfume, craft items, locally distilled alcohol, food and treats, clothes, accessories and handmade gifts, Frome’s traders offer a wide range of items for everyone.

Late night Christmas shopping is also coming to Frome on Friday 19th December, offering another opportunity to enjoy the town at its festive best while supporting Frome’s independent businesses.

Frome town councillor Nick Dove said, “We’ve got a fantastic range of independent businesses in Frome. Every pound you spend with them makes a huge difference, not just to the individuals involved but also to the local economy, unlike money spent with large retailers. Please shop local this Christmas and help our town centre thrive.”

  • Top comedy thriller comes to the Merlin this Christmas

A comedy thriller named one of the Telegraph’s Top 50 Christmas shows is coming to the Merlin Theatre this Christmas.

Crimes Against Christmas is loosely inspired by Agatha Christie’s Then There Were None, and follows a group of strangers summoned to a remote island only to start dying in mysteriously Christmassy ways.

Organisers say, “The show is performed with just four actors: New Old Friends stalwart Kirsty Cox, two new brilliant, local performers Dan Gaisford and Andrew McGilla and the long-awaited return of company founder Heather Westwell. They bring to life over a dozen eccentric characters in this laugh-a-minute pastiche of a classic murder mystery. Expect lightning-fast costume changes, sharp wit, inventive staging, and more jokes than you can shake a candy cane at. "

The show will run from Wednesday 17th to Sunday 28th December. Tickets can be purchased on the Merlin Theatre’s website https://buff.ly/tZVjqDW or box office 01373 465949.

  • Talk to explore Edwardian folk pioneer

Frome Society’s winter programme of 12 fortnightly Saturday afternoon lectures continues on 13th December with a talk by David Sutcliffe on Cecil Sharp: Collector of Folk Songs and Dances.

Cecil Sharp was a leading figure in the Edwardian Folk Revival, collecting hundreds of songs and dances that were fast disappearing at the time.

Organisers say, “As well as folk songs and sea shanties, he rescued Morris dances, sword dances and country dances and contributed significantly to our stock of Christmas carols, including discovering the tune for The Holly and the Ivy that we sing at Christmas.”
