For some, Colin Firth emerging from a lake in that clinging wet shirt is one of the most iconic moments in television. But what is it about Mr Darcy that holds such fascination 200 years on?
On Tuesday 28th January, Hunting Raven will be hosting a special event with author and Austen-enthusiast, Dr Gabrielle Malcolm.
Expect an entertaining and enlightening evening as Gabrielle takes us through the many modern representations of the man (vampire Darcy, digital Darcy, Mormon Darcy and gay Darcy), argues the toss over ‘who did Darcy best’, and considers how a clergyman’s daughter from Hampshire managed to create one of literature’s best-loved and most enduring characters.
Dr Gabrielle Malcolm lectures and writes about Jane Austen in popular culture and the global fan phenomena surrounding Austen’s work. She is the author of ‘There’s Something About Darcy’ and is a regular speaker at the annual Jane Austen Festival in Bath where she lives.
