Town foiled by two late goals

Mon 2nd Jan. Southern League Div. One South Frome Town 2 – 2 Larkhall Athletic

FROME Town stumbled to a draw with in-form Larkhall, conceding an equaliser in the dying moments of a game where they had appeared comfortable.

Though Danny Greaves’ side managed to put a stop to their recent run of defeats on the road, the Robins once more slipped from a winning position and ended up dropping points.

George Rigg’s brace, scoring either side of half-time, made a first victory for Frome since mid-November look a real possibility, but late goals from Harley Prior and Max Williams spoilt the New Year’s party at a sunlit Badgers Hill.

As acknowledged by club officials and the manager in the build-up to the game, the Robins’ form has been distinctly patchy in recent weeks with three consecutive defeats on the road, the latest of these being a 3-2 loss away at noisy neighbours Melksham on Boxing Day, a game in which the side had plenty of opportunities to win. Due to cancellations and rescheduling, this was the first game at home for Frome in nearly seven weeks, but a clash with Larkhall posed a serious challenge for a team low on confidence.

As Frome’s form and aspirations for automatic promotion this season have faded into a distant horizon, this is a Larkhall side whose performances have been going from strength to strength and came into the game with three wins in their last four games. It was clear from the first few seconds of the game that the season of goodwill and cheer had come to an end. The opening jabs of this bout were marked by fierce challenges, as a vocal crowd of 485 lost track of the number of cards and talking-tos given in short succession by the referee.

Neither side looked eager to attack during the first half hour, but Frome’s superiority in possession gave them the edge. Nonetheless, there were few chances to note until the Larkhall defence were caught napping. Jono Davies’ twisting run and cross from the right saw the ball land between the centre-backs. Profiting on their hesitancy, the canny George Rigg nipped in and tapped past the keeper.

Frome had their lead, but it was then that the emotion boiled over, the game descending into a brawl, an unsightly one but a demonstration, perhaps, that the desire of this Frome side should not be questioned. A suspected hamstring injury to Jono Davies, whose 200th appearance for the club earlier this season was celebrated this week, was a heavy blow for the home side and not the sight any supporter wanted to see. The response to the manager’s call for more heart and desire was plain to see in the second half, their continued efforts to attack down the flanks and the Larks’ struggles to gain a foothold in the game allowing for a buoyant mood in the ground.

It was one of these forays down the right when Ollis pivoted around a blue shirt and provided a sweeping cross for Rigg to creep in at the back post for his second with just 15 minutes left on the clock. The game was meandering to an uneventful close when a Larkhall attack found substitute Harley Prior for a surprise goal. Hopes that this would be a mere consolation for the visitors were dashed when in the 89th minute Max Williams’ corner was clumsily fumbled into the net instead of headed clear at the near post.

These were two eminently avoidable chances, defensive naivety and lapses of concentration to blame for both, that ushered the Larks back into the game and will be particularly galling. Though the team’s ability was more frequently on show than in previous displays, the challenge of consecutive away trips to the South Coast at Totton and Wimborne next week will require a much more complete performance.

  • Puppini Sisters to mark 20 years with Cheese & Grain show

The Puppini Sisters will celebrate their 20th anniversary with a special performance at the Cheese & Grain in Frome on Saturday, 23rd May.

Known for their ‘close harmonies, corsets and clever covers’, the trio were formed by Bologna-born Marcella Puppini at London’s Trinity College of Music. They made their breakthrough with debut album Betcha Bottom Dollar in 2006, which became the fastest-selling jazz debut in UK chart history.

“From festival stages to royal soirées, they have dazzled the world with their retro-glam style and genre-bending swing,” said Rob Dahl from the Cheese & Grain. “The world’s leading queens of vocal harmony, their sassy swing take on everything from Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy to Heart of Glass won over fans from Michael Bublé to King Charles.

“Their signature style, part Vivienne Westwood, part burlesque, helped spark the vintage revival.’

“Corsets were essential,” said Marcella. “We could see vintage booming, but even I didn’t expect it to get this big.”

  • Long-standing fete cancelled for second year

An annual fete which has raised funds for charity for more than 50 years has been cancelled for a second consecutive year.

The Frome Lions Club’s free family fun day was due to take place in June at Victoria Park. However, organisers said they have had to cancel the event again because key events and stallholders have dropped out.

Lion Mike Geake said, “We do not consider it viable to hold the event this year and have not taken this decision lightly.”

The long-running fete was also cancelled last year, following a request from Frome Town Council that participants do not leave vehicles in the park during events.

  • New studio takes working out to new heights with bungee fitness

A new fitness studio is turning exercise on its head - quite literally.

Velocity Bungee Fitness, based at Norbeck Enterprise Centre, Warminster offers classes using suspended bungee rigs that allow participants to jump, glide and exercise with reduced impact on their joints.

“The idea came from a desire to bring something genuinely different to the local fitness scene,” said owner Stacey Holborow. “It’s fun, inclusive and accessible to people who might not feel at home in a traditional gym.”

Stacey opened the studio after trying bungee fitness herself.

“After experiencing bungee fitness firsthand and seeing how empowering it could be, I knew it was something worth bringing to the local area,” she said.

“You’re harnessed to a bungee cord suspended from purpose-built rigging, which supports your weight and allows you to jump, glide and move in ways you simply can’t on the ground.

  • Players prepare for 24-hour charity ‘bowl-a-thon’

Two members of a Frome bowls club will be rolling up their sleeves – and rolling out their bowls – for a 24-hour marathon in aid of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Frome Selwood Bowling Club’s Ladies’ Captain Kathy Kingman and Club Secretary Mike Bishop will play two back-to-back 12-hour bowls sessions on 23rd and 24th May, running from 9am to 9pm.

Spectators and supporters are invited to attend throughout the weekend to support the pair or have a go at playing bowls on the club’s spare rinks, with a suggested donation to the fundraising pot.

Kathy said, “We’re thrilled to be taking on this challenge for such an important local charity. We’d love to see the community come out and support us whether that’s cheering us on, buying a raffle ticket or picking up a bowl and giving it a try.”

  • Frome through to Regional play-offs

Frome Netball Report:
Frome Stars vs Lawn
County Playoffs - 26th April

Frome are through to the Regional play-offs after defeating Lawn, league winners of the other Wiltshire league.

Held in Swindon, we arrived early, settling ourselves courtside and got straight down to business. Our starting seven came out all guns blazing, gave their all and were taking no prisoners.

Outstanding shooting from GA Liv and GS Nat and, with so much pressure, they came out and delivered. Incredible mid court, from WA Laura, supported in the last quarter by Ella and C Han, delivering balls into the shooting circle with patience and speed, not to mention incredible defence back down the court. And finally WD Gi, GD Freya and GK Lucy working like an unstoppable unit to delay, confuse and regain possession.

With a final score of 45 – 27 Frome will go on to their next and final challenge in a bid to become a Regional 3 team.
