FEMALE football in Frome is growing fast with nearly 100% increase in number of female players now registered and playing football in Frome every week at Frome Town United (Frome’s junior club for boys and girls) and Frome Women’s Team.
18 months ago, numbers were around half this but thanks to the efforts of Frome Town United and Frome Women’s Team to create a pathway for women and girls to be able to play football from the age of six and over, Frome has been able to take on more and more new-comers, keen to follow in the footsteps of the Lionesses.
Last weekend saw Frome Town United’s Under 11 girls’ team compete in their first even County Tournament at Somerset FA’s Festival of Fun Football in Street. 14 girls took to the pitch across four matches for Frome, playing against other girls’ teams from across Somerset.
The team has grown fast over the last year and now has over 20 players playing every week. Thanks to sponsorship from Barratt Homes, the girls have all been able to play in brand new Frome Town United kit as well. The event was extremely successful with the girls showing how quickly they are learning to play, scoring some great goals and having great fun. The team will be back for the next festival in November.
Another team which has grown in the past year, Frome Town United’s under 13 girls’ team, are in their first season aligned to a league, joining Wiltshire County Woman’s and Girls league. In their first match away in Swindon to Kingsdown, they found themselves 2-1 down just before half time, but came back with some fantastic goals to win the match 5 – 2.
Frome Women’s Team, meanwhile, is enjoying a good start to their season which continued this Sunday with a 5-0 win over Middlezoy Rovers Ladies, at Badger’s Hill. Two of the players came up through the ranks of Frome Town United, graduating from Under 16s girls’ football last season, showing again the strong pathway for female football that Frome has developed. The Women’s Team have taken 7 points from their first 3 league games and now look to build on that with more matches to come.
