Frome Ukulele Club got the Christmas season off to a flying start at their Rook Lane Chapel gig last week, with lots of Christmas classics and a cheque for £1,000 for local charity Frome Openstorytellers.
Malcolm Lloyd from Frome Ukulele Club said, “A packed house was treated to some old favourites, but also to a number of new songs – and they went down a storm! Entitled ‘The Christmas Parsnip’ the fundraising included a draw in which parsnips (and other vegetables) were drawn from a sack, with lucky numbers written on them. After the event, the vegetables were donated to the food bank run by Fair Frome.
“Guests of honour were members of Openstorytellers, who were there to receive a cheque for £1,000 – raised by the ukulele club who have been playing at various places throughout the year in order to swell their charity coffers. Openstorytellers want people with learning and communication difficulties to be heard, understood, included and valued.”
Chairman of Frome Ukulele Club, George Chedburn said, “We are pleased to be supporting such a worthwhile and local group. It is great to see so many of them here.”
The club will be supporting Time Is Precious, another local charity, in 2018.
Further fundraising will take place at The Cornerhouse on Friday 22nd December at 8pm when Frome Ukulele Club perform at their home venue (the club meets at The Cornerhouse every Thursday evening) for a “last night before Christmas” performance. Entry is free, so all are welcome.
