Hunting Raven bookshop will be holding a children’s public-speaking event on their doorstep on Saturday 22nd June from 12pm until 1pm. The event will give an opportunity for Frome’s children and young people to speak to others about climate change and the need for all of us to engage with the future of our planet.
The event, run in partnership with Fridays 4 Future Frome, coincides with the release of a new book by young climate change activist, Greta Thunberg. ‘No One Is Too Small to Make A Difference’ is composed of speeches made by the 16-year-old climate change activist at such places as the World Economic Forum and the UN; it is a rallying cry for why we must all wake up and fight to protect the planet, no matter how powerless we feel.
Alex Somerville of Fridays 4 Future Frome says, “Greta Thunberg has been a leading figure in the climate change debate; first, striking from school repeatedly and consistently, and secondly, speaking clearly and confidently to world leaders. Since the first strike in Frome on 15th February, young people in the town have been inspired by her and have started to speak up during the demonstrations on strike days. In May, Frome resident Dave Clarke led a workshop for children to learn and practise how to speak in public. From the workshop, it was clear that while there are many techniques to make a speech successful, the young participants came up with most techniques without prompting. So, an opportunity is all that’s necessary and Saturday 22nd June at 12pm will be one of them.
“The next school strike day is on Friday 21st June during which there will be a demonstration at 11am at the Boyle’s Cross fountain. Fridays 4 Future Frome have been active in publicising and guiding children to get involved in the strike action.
