A VOLUNTEER in the Frome Town Table Tennis Club has won the South West Female Volunteer of the Year Award in the Pride of Table Tennis Awards, following her efforts in organising and running the club.
The awards, that are run by Table Tennis England, celebrate volunteers for their valuable, outstanding and unseen contribution to their teams over the last 12 months. Josephine Boyd was presented with the award on Thursday 2nd February.
“I am really surprised to win this,” she said. “It’s really nice to be nominated, it’s absolutely lovely.”
Josephine began playing table tennis at university and is now part of the Frome Town Table Tennis Club that formed three years ago and is now the biggest club in Mendip.
The club meets on a Sunday and Thursday at Frome Youth Club on Vallis Road with some members also playing in the Mendip League. Josephine said, “The Sunday sessions are for the league players and the Thursday sessions are for anyone who wants to play recreationally and for socialising. The club has grown; we have lots of new players. We don’t have as many women as we would like so we are trying to get more to come and play. Everyone who joins just really enjoys it.”
Members pay a fee of £12.50 a month and this enables them to play every week. Josephine said, “Anyone is welcome to come and join us and if people want to play in the league, we can usually decide that when they have been to play a few times. We try and get as many people into the league as possible. It’s not essential though, people can just come along and play recreationally if they want to.”
