Cancer counselling charity We Hear You (WHY) is offering women affected by cancer the chance to join Cheryl Sprinkler of local dance exercise phenomenon ‘Mojo Moves’, thanks to funding from the Tampon Tax Community Fund.

The charity has joined up with larger-than-life character Cheryl Sprinkler, aka Ginny Adams of theatre company Rare Species, to offer free passes for Mojo Moves, a ‘feel good immersive comedy aerobics workout’ aimed at boosting mood through exercise.

Cheryl says, “My classes are all about reclaiming your mojo back from the universe and are ideal for people going through difficult times as they allow you to completely lose yourself and dance like no-one’s watching. There’s no such thing as a wrong move!”

Communications officer Lucy McMahon says, “At WHY we’re always looking for new ways to support people affected by cancer or a life threatening condition and it’s fantastic to join forces with the force of nature that is Cheryl Sprinkler and offer the chance to get involved with a very popular local activity.

“Thanks so much to Cheryl/Ginny for all her support, which has included a three-hour fundraising ‘Mojo Moveathon’, a mass warmup at the final mile of Rachel Clark’s ‘365 for WHY’ challenge and signing up for the Bath Half in March, which she’ll be running in character! Passes are limited, as is the funding from the Tampon Tax, so if you’re affected by cancer or a life threatening condition and would like a free pass for Mojo Moves, give us a call on 01373 455255. It’s first-come, first-served, but it’s something we might well do more of, so let us know how it was for you!”

Mojo Moves offers four adult classes throughout the week and an adapted version for parents and carers to join in with their pre-school age children. Class times are available at www.mojomoves.co.uk.

WHY’s free passes for Mojo Moves are available on a first-come, first-served basis to women affected directly or indirectly by cancer or a life threatening condition. You don’t need to be on WHY’s waiting list or currently in counselling to qualify. The offer will run until the passes have been used and participants are welcome to bring a friend or partner with them. To find out more and request a pass, call We Hear You on 01373 455255 or email ruth. knagg@ wehearyou.org.uk.

To access WHY’s free professional counselling service for anyone affected by a life threatening condition, please email info@ wehearyou.org.uk.

  • Remember loved ones with Tree of Remembrance

The annual Tree of Remembrance has been erected outside Rook Lane Chapel and residents are invited to make a donation to the Frome Lions Club in memory of a loved one or memorable cause.

Each light on the tree will remember someone or a cause. Donors will receive a personal acknowledgement and the names and causes will also be displayed on a dedication board at Rook Lane until early January.

All donations to the tree will be used by the Frome Lions Club to support an appeal by RUHX, the official charity of the Royal United Hospital Bath foundation trust, to install a new PET-CT scanner.

  • Frome Home Bargains store approved

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

A discount retailer will be coming to Frome and creating more than 100 local jobs after plans were approved by local councillors.

Home Bargains has been given full planning permission by Somerset Council, to be developed on commercial land near Frome’s Sainsbury’s, despite local concerns about traffic congestion on the neighbouring roads.

Mendip District Council granted outline planning permission in July 2020 for 235 homes and commercial premises either side of Sandys Hill Lane, near the town’s Sainsbury’s supermarket and McDonald’s drive-thru among other businesses.

  • Residents encouraged to support Frome this Christmas

Residents are being encouraged to shop locally this Christmas and support businesses in Frome to boost the local economy.

From buying Christmas cards, toys, home décor, plants, perfume, craft items, locally distilled alcohol, food and treats, clothes, accessories and handmade gifts, Frome’s traders offer a wide range of items for everyone.

Late night Christmas shopping is also coming to Frome on Friday 19th December, offering another opportunity to enjoy the town at its festive best while supporting Frome’s independent businesses.

Frome town councillor Nick Dove said, “We’ve got a fantastic range of independent businesses in Frome. Every pound you spend with them makes a huge difference, not just to the individuals involved but also to the local economy, unlike money spent with large retailers. Please shop local this Christmas and help our town centre thrive.”

  • Top comedy thriller comes to the Merlin this Christmas

A comedy thriller named one of the Telegraph’s Top 50 Christmas shows is coming to the Merlin Theatre this Christmas.

Crimes Against Christmas is loosely inspired by Agatha Christie’s Then There Were None, and follows a group of strangers summoned to a remote island only to start dying in mysteriously Christmassy ways.

Organisers say, “The show is performed with just four actors: New Old Friends stalwart Kirsty Cox, two new brilliant, local performers Dan Gaisford and Andrew McGilla and the long-awaited return of company founder Heather Westwell. They bring to life over a dozen eccentric characters in this laugh-a-minute pastiche of a classic murder mystery. Expect lightning-fast costume changes, sharp wit, inventive staging, and more jokes than you can shake a candy cane at. "

The show will run from Wednesday 17th to Sunday 28th December. Tickets can be purchased on the Merlin Theatre’s website https://buff.ly/tZVjqDW or box office 01373 465949.
  • Frome Poppy Appeal raises over £48,000

Frome’s Poppy Appeal has raised over £48,000 in donations this year.

The funds were collected by volunteers manning stalls in local supermarkets selling poppies, as well as through donations from local businesses, organisations and schools.

Frome and District Poppy Appeal organiser Richard Aspray said, “We had many kind volunteers, as well as several local organisations, supporting us this year. I would like to thank all of our volunteers, as well as the supermarkets, businesses, organisations and schools that took part in this year’s appeal.”

The money raised goes to the Royal British Legion, which provides lifelong support to the UK’s armed forces, including serving personnel, veterans and their families.

  • Talk to explore Edwardian folk pioneer

Frome Society’s winter programme of 12 fortnightly Saturday afternoon lectures continues on 13th December with a talk by David Sutcliffe on Cecil Sharp: Collector of Folk Songs and Dances.

Cecil Sharp was a leading figure in the Edwardian Folk Revival, collecting hundreds of songs and dances that were fast disappearing at the time.

Organisers say, “As well as folk songs and sea shanties, he rescued Morris dances, sword dances and country dances and contributed significantly to our stock of Christmas carols, including discovering the tune for The Holly and the Ivy that we sing at Christmas.”

  • Fundraiser launched for Frome Christmas Day

A fundraiser has been launched by local volunteers to provide a special Christmas Day for residents and families from all backgrounds who are struggling financially, as well as anyone who feels lonely around that time of year.

The appeal aims to raise £3,000 for the annual Christmas Get Together, which will provide 200 two-course meals with all the trimmings, along with individual gifts, transport to and from venues, carol singing, games, entertainment and company on the day.

The Christmas Get Together began 18 years ago when the community of Frome wanted to create an event on Christmas Day for people who would otherwise be on their own. It is run by a collaboration of local people, businesses and volunteers who donate their time.

  • Support local traders at the Frome Weekly Market

As the festive season gets underway, Frome Weekly Market is gearing up for some of the busiest markets of the year and calling for shoppers to support small businesses and buy local.

Held every Saturday and Wednesday in the Market Yard by Frome Library, the market offers a mix of fresh local produce, homewares, clothing, jewellery and plants, making it the perfect place to pick up affordable Christmas gifts.

“Frome has a great town centre and if we want that to continue it’s really important to support Frome Weekly Market”, says organiser, Kate Bielby. “The market is a great place to shop and it’s also a really lovely community space for people to chat with traders and other customers. "
