COMPETITORS taking part in a special three-day classic motorsport trial to celebrate the Motor Cycling Club’s (MCC) 120th anniversary will be coming to Frome.
They will be pulling up into the Cattle Market car park, from 10am this Friday 24th June, where they will stop for a compulsory one-hour break.
The club, which is Britain’s oldest sporting motor club for cars and bikes, says, “Visitors will have the chance to talk to the competitors about their machines and the crazy events they take part in (usually through the night going all the way to Land’s End or Edinburgh). There will be everything from pre-war bikes and cars through to modern day, home-made specials, kit cars and all manner of vehicles that take part in our events.
“There are around 120 entrants signed up arriving at one minute intervals, so the event will go from 10am to around 1pm until the last competitor gets back on the road to continue the trial.”
The special three-day event, from 24th to 26th June, will see around 100 trialists testing classic motorcycles and cars on technical off-road trials sections across a 530-mile course in the South West.
The event is set to attract unusual and old vehicles such as a Trojan, various pre-war MGs and Rileys, and Motorbikes including BSA and Triumphs as well as sidecars and all manner of home-made machinery, and will test competitors’ riding and driving skills as they negotiate difficult uphill sections and technical restarts. Classic trials such as this event are the original form of car trials, and attract vehicles dating from as early as the 1920s.
Chairman of the MCC, Phil Tucker, said, “After a delay due to Covid, it’s thrilling to be able to run this three-day anniversary event which will be a fitting tribute to our previous 120 years of innovation in grassroots motorsport.
“Our events are landmarks in the trials calendar and present an enjoyable challenge for cars and bikes alike. We welcome any new motor sport enthusiasts to join us on this or any other of our future events – our friendly community is still rooted in the love of the sport that created the MCC more than a century ago.”
The anniversary event is named the MCC 120th Anniversary Dick Peachey Three Day Trial in tribute to the former chairman of the club, Dick Peachey, from Tonbridge, Kent who died earlier this year.
