Autumn season at Frome’s Merlin Theatre starts with a packed programme for September, with the next show a comedy ‘whodunnit’ this Saturday.
Comic, performance poet and ex-psychiatric nurse, Rob Gee, makes a return visit to the Merlin with his new one-man show, in which a retired police officer investigates his wife’s death on a dementia ward – only his memory’s not too great either! ‘Forget Me Not’ is on Saturday 10th September at 7.45pm. Recommended 16+; tickets are £12.50.
Then, there’s a taste of the real Spain on Saturday 17th September, when Flamencovision brings the music, song and dance of Andalucia to Frome in the shape of the Juan Martin Flamenco Trio, promising an enthralling evening of instrumental solos, songs and authentic dances. Tickets are £17 and the show is recommended for all ages.
In a busy week of varied entertainment, musical satirist and regular on BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Now Show’, Mitch Benn comes to the Merlin on Wednesday 21st September with his new tour ‘Don’t Believe a Word’.
He will be followed on Thursday 22nd by a NTLive showing of a new production of Brecht and Weill’s ‘The Threepenny Opera’, starring Rory Kinnear as Macheath.
Local talent is showcased the following night, Friday 23rd, when Emma Golay presents ‘Sing out for Cancer’, an evening full of favourite songs from well-known musicals to raise money for Cancer Research and Dorothy House.
Two offerings from the Pocket Oxford Theatre round up the week on Saturday 24th, with fast-paced versions of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (3pm) and ‘Hamlet’ (6pm). At 70 minutes each, these original and entertaining productions are ideal introductions to Shakespeare’s stories for younger audiences and great fun for everybody.
Two filmed theatre screenings are scheduled at the end of the month. A new season of Royal Opera House productions opens with Bellini’s ‘Norma’ on Monday 26th September, and a Royal Shakespeare Company production of one of Shakespeare’s more rarely produced plays, ‘Cymbeline’, takes place on Wednesday 28th.
