A LOCAL woman who submitted a petition to the town council highlighting the ‘dangerous’ paths in Victoria Park, has expressed her delight at the news that the town council will repair them.
Feeling at risk of tripping on the uneven paths, 88-year old Betty Duke from Park Road, organised a petition asking her fellow residents at Longleat Court to support her mission.
Betty collected over 120 signatures before passing on the petition to the Mayor of Frome, cllr Sheila Gore.
At the Council Matters committee on Wednesday 1st November, it was decided that the entrances to Victoria Park should be resurfaced next spring.
On hearing the news, Betty said, “I am delighted! It’s nice to know that we have been heard and that something will be done about it. When I told Gladys, who was also involved in the petition, she was very pleased and had a huge grin on her face.
“I’m sure all the parents with pushchairs and people with mobility issues will be happy with the news.
“I think it would be a good idea now for someone to organise a community group, something like a ‘Friends of Victoria Park’ group to raise money and help with the upkeep of the park.”
The money to repair the paths will come from Section 106 money given to Frome Town Council by developers towards the costs of providing community and social infrastructure.
Resurfacing all of the perimeter path in Victoria Park using a potential £100,000 of the £250,000 Section 106 money available to the council was also discussed at the meeting.
It was decided that whilst the entrances to the park needed urgent repair, there needs to be more investigation into how much of the perimeter path needs repairing before the council spends the money.
