THERE is an exciting line-up at the Cheese and Grain for September including Jo Whiley (sold out), Martin Kemp, Brit Award winning songstress Beth Orton, Trevor Nelson, Paul Merson and Matt Le Tissier, top tribute bands, great live bands and more, along with a wide range of markets and fairs.

Coming up are…

• OAS-IS – Saturday 4th September. Doors 7.30pm. Oas-is are The UK’S BEST Tribute to Manchester’s finest Rock n Roll band Oasis. Support from Craig & Alex Priddice.

• THE WILDHEARTS – Monday 6th Sept. Doors 7.30pm. For three 3 decades The Wildhearts have remained at the forefront of the British rock scene. From their classic debut album ‘Earth Vs’ (voted number one album of the year in Kerrang! back in 1993, and number 20 in the best rock albums of all time in a Kerrang! Special in 2006), through to now with the release of ‘Renaissance Men’, their first full-length studio album in 10 years, their creative output and legendary live shows have been second to none. With support from Raging Speedhorn

• BETH ORTON – Thursday 9th Sept. Doors 7.30pm. Brit Award winning songstress Beth Orton returns to Frome.  One of the most original voices in music, a trailblazer who has paved the way for many, her debut LP Trailer Park pioneered a synthesis of electronic + acoustic songs to huge acclaim, including two Brit Award and Mercury Award nominations. The follow-up Central Reservation brought international success & the Brit Award for Best British female.

• JO WHILEYS 90s ANTHEMS. Friday 10th + Saturday 11th September. *SOLD OUT*. Bringing you all the best tracks from the greatest decade for music, think Blur vs Oasis, Fatboy Slim, Primal Scream, The Verve, The Chemical Brothers, Faithless, The Prodigy and a whole lot more

• T-REXTASY – Sunday 12th Sept. Doors 7.30pm. T.Rextasy have now been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically out live’s Marcs very own T.Rex. The band is now accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management. The band has been described by many as beyond the boundaries of tribute. Truly a rock n roll concert for all ages

• AN EVENING WITH PAUL MERSON & MATT LE TISSIER – Thurs 16th Sept. Doors 7pm. England internationals, football icons and current Sky Sports Soccer Saturday pundits Paul Merson & Matt Le Tissier will be presenting a special “An Evening With…” at The Cheese & Grain. Including Drew Stansall in the line-up and support from Roddy Radiation and the Skabilly Rebels, it will truly be a ‘Special’ night.

• THE VACCINES – Tuesday 21st Sept. Doors 8pm. Since the band’s inception they have sold over two million records worldwide, cementing their position as torch-carriers for British guitar music in the modern era. The new record follows the tenth anniversary celebrations of their seminal debut, What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? which first catapulted the band into the modern rock and roll canon. Each of their four albums so far have charted in the Top 5 in the UK, with second album, Come Of Age, hitting #1. Multiple Brit, NME, Q, Mojo awards nominees, they have a fierce live reputation forged through arena-filling headline shows and unforgettable slots at festivals including Glastonbury and Reading/Leeds.

• MARTHA WAINWRIGHT – Thursday 23rd Sept. Doors 7.30pm. The beguiling performer and songwriter returns with Love Will Be Reborn, out in August. Not since 2012’s Come Home to Mama has a Martha Wainwright record been so full of original written material. Wainwright’s fifth studio album follows recent years of loneliness and clarity in search of optimism and joy.

• GOLDIE LOOKIN CHAIN – Friday 24th Sept. Doors 7pm. Coming straight out of Newport, The GLC are officially Britain’s biggest rap group. Known for classics like “Guns don’t kill people rappers do” and ‘Soapbar’, they perform around the world and at every major festival in the Western Hemisphere and make millions of people laugh along the way. Support from WMF, Gorilla Tactics, Monkey Bizzle and Flow & Hustle.

• FROME 80s FEST FT. MARTIN KEMP, MUSICAL YOUTH + MORE. Saturday 25th Sept. Doors 5pm. The Spandau Ballet star will be taking to the decks again and spinning all the best of the hits from the ‘80s. As the biggest ‘80s night to ever hit Frome returns by extremely popular demand. Support from Ant Trouble.

• WOLF ALICE. Sunday 26th Sept. Mercury Music Prize winning superstars WOLF ALICE come to Frome for a very special Revive Live show. With their distinctive blend of vintage ’90s indie rock, folk, electronic, and dream pop, Wolf Alice are one of the most eclectic bands of the 2010s and 2020s. They’re also one of the most acclaimed: The North London group’s 2015 debut album My Love Is Cool — which highlighted the delicacy and ferocity of Ellie Rowsell’s vocals and lyrics — counted Grammy Award and Mercury Prize nominations among its many accolades.

The band won the Mercury Prize for 2017’s Visions of a Life, an album that added more elements, as well as more polish, to their music, and on 2021’s anthemic yet atmospheric Blue Weekend, Wolf Alice’s ambitions and horizons continued to grow.

• FROM THE JAM – Thursday 30th Sept. Doors 7pm. This autumn From the Jam will tour the UK celebrating the 40th Anniversary of The Jam’s 4th studio album ‘Setting Sons’. The critically acclaimed album reached #4 in the UK and was the band’s first album to enter the US charts. Succeeding ‘All Mod Cons’, the album became a commercial success, earning them their first top ten hit single – ‘The Eton Rifles’. Support from The Vapors.

  • Frome bands set for regional semi-final

Two Frome bands will compete in the semi-finals of Bristol’s biggest battle of the bands, with the chance to boost their profile across the South West.

Jump Jump Joan and Butane Skies have reached the semi-finals of Underdog 2026, set to be held at Thekla in Bristol on 12th April.

Prizes include £1,000, two full days in a professional recording studio, a promotional photoshoot, custom t-shirts, a mini tour of the South West, and the opportunity to play the final at the O2 in Bristol.

Lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Jump Jump Joan, Sarah Hobbs, said it was a “great opportunity” for new bands.

“We were really thrilled to win our heats,” she said. “There were 72 bands who went into the initial heats, run over 12 events at the Thunderbolt in Bristol."

  • Frome family takes on 26 challenges for Motor Neurone Disease

A Frome family is taking on 26 challenges in 2026 to raise funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease charities, after their mum was diagnosed with the illness.

From marathons and triathlons to a silent touch rugby match, the family hopes their efforts will show how MND affects patients, while supporting the charities Motor Neurone Disease Association, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and 4Ed.

Local resident Dominic Jones said his mother, Nicola Jones, received her MND diagnosis in May last year. He explained, “We’ve got a whole host of Snowdonia challenges, various triathlons, functional fitness challenges and we have also got a darts challenge because of the element of motor skills and motor movements. I chose to do 26 challenges because it is 2026.”

Dominic will also be running the Bath Half Marathon in March and a 70-mile Ultra Marathon in 24 hours later in the year. For some of the running challenges, he will be wearing a breathing apparatus raising awareness of how MND affects patients’ breathing.

  • Safety improvement plans for Frome Bypass progress

Plans to improve road safety on the A361 Frome Bypass are moving forward.

Somerset Council is consulting on reducing the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph on the road, used by around 15,000 motorists a day, where five people have died in collisions over the past five years.

The proposals also include resurfacing the road, introducing central hatching to narrow lanes where possible, cutting back vegetation to improve visibility and upgrading road markings to make them more visible.

Subject to any objections being resolved, a scheme to implement the reduced speed limit would start at the same time as resurfacing work at the A361/A362 junction, currently planned from 7th to 20th May.

The works follow extensive campaigning by residents, councillors and the local MP Anna Sabine for safety measures on the road,

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste, said, “We are developing further plans for making this road safer with an improved road surface, and measures to reduce traffic speeds through the proposed speed limit and introduction of central hatching to reduce the road width, where feasible.

  • Frome marks International Women’s Day

Frome celebrated International Women’s Day last week with theatre, discussion, tea, cake, cycling - and a 32-foot American school bus named Susie. On Saturday 7th March, town councillors gathered at the Saturday market for their monthly ‘meet the councillor’ session. This month, they were accompanied by performer and influencer Lu Featherstone, aka ‘Lu in Luland’ and members of the councils’ White Ribbon group, talking about the positive role of male allyship and encouraging market-goers to take the White Ribbon pledge to ‘never use, excuse or remain silent about violence against women and girls.’
On Sunday 8 March, Frome Community Bike Project hosted a friendly drop-in session for women starting or returning to cycling at their base at Station Approach with tea, cake, advice and low-cost bikes and equipment on offer.

  • Anger at Packsaddle Fields path closure

Residents gathered at Packsaddle Fields in protest ahead of the removal of public access across the site, with fencing expected to be installed this week.

Campaigners including residents, MP Anna Sabine and Somerset councillors gathered at the fields on Sunday 8th March to meet and form a human chain along part of the permissive path that will be closed.

They say the plan for Somerset Council to install fences follows legal pressure from housing association LiveWest after its plans to build homes on the site were refused. They accused the developer of ‘bullying’ tactics.

The site, on the northern edge of Frome, has been owned by Somerset Council since 1973. The public had been able to use a permissive path across the land, which was allowed at the council’s discretion rather than being a formal public right of way.

In March 2022 the council agreed to dispose of the land and later signed an Option Agreement with LiveWest in July that year.

An option agreement gives a developer the right to buy land within a set period if certain conditions are met, usually including securing planning permission.

  • A pair of ‘Ace players’ at Frome Bridge Club

For the first time in history, Frome Bridge Club is celebrating its first pair of Ace-graded players.

Club Chair Ray Nicholson and Committee member David Clayton reached the English Bridge Union rank of Ace within a fortnight of each other in January, placing them among the top 10 bridge players in Somerset.

First to the post was David, when a Monday night Club Pairs score of 76.3% lifted his National Grading Scheme (NGS) rank over the Ace of Clubs threshold of 61%. Two Mondays later, it was Ray’s turn.

Both learnt to play bridge in their youth before taking a long break and resuming later in life. David joined the club after moving to Frome in 2023, and his rise to Ace-grade playing has been swift.

  • Rotary’s big quiz raises over £1,000

A big quiz raised over £1,000 for Frome Town Rotary to help the club continue supporting local causes and charities.

Held recently at Oakfield Academy, the quiz saw 22 teams play 10 rounds of questions.

Frome Town Rotary member Lorraine said, “22 teams cheered, groaned and laughed their way through 10 rounds of questions, including a great music round. The winning team was NBG, with a score of 81 out of 100. The Corsley Heathens were a close second with 80 points.

“Congratulations to them and a big thank you to everyone who came along. Just over £1,000 was raised through ticket sales, a licensed bar and a raffle.

“There were a lot of positive comments made on the night, with people saying it was a ‘great evening’ and that they ‘really enjoyed it.’”

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column: Setting up home

Hi, this is Jane from the Wild Bunch.

After the wettest January on record, most of us are looking forward to getting out into the open air – whether to plant up a backdoor flowerpot or window box, visit one of Frome’s community gardens or open spaces, or to start work on our own garden or allotment. As we face a major biodiversity crisis, said by some to be so serious as to threaten our national security, every step – large or small – that we take as individuals to support wildlife is important.

This is the time of year when birds are busy setting up home, having traditionally paired up by Valentine’s Day. Do you have a bird box in your garden or local community space? If so, now is the time to give it a quick clean, so long as no-one has already moved in! If you have not yet got a nest box, this is a good time to buy one – or even make it yourself. The bird charity RSPB has instructions on its website, including advice on the size of box and shape of entry hole for different breeds. Alternatively, the Wild Bunch runs bird box building workshops from time to time – look out for forthcoming sessions on Facebook or email us (address at the end).

  • Frome chronic pain project links health and environment

A project empowering people to live well with chronic pain has been hailed a success.

Green and Healthy Frome partnered with Frome Medical Practice to introduce a Chronic Pain Initiative exploring holistic approaches to pain management.

Patients were invited to take part in structured medication reviews, explore alternative approaches to pain management and engage in the Ten Footsteps course – a supportive face-to-face programme designed to empower self-management and help people live well with persistent pain.

Pain Cafés also provided welcoming spaces for people to connect and share experiences, encouraging one another on their journey. The approach was not about reducing medication but about offering choice, support and the resources needed to live well with pain.
