Christmas is coming to town

IT’S time to start feeling festive as the Christmas Lights switch on is returning to the town on Friday 25th November from 5pm to 7pm.

Along with local music and foodie treats, the spectacular ‘Light the Night’ lantern parade is back, this year with the sweet touch of ‘Gingerbread Town’. Think gingerbread houses of all shapes and sizes, gingerbread people, lollipops and candy canes all made into glowing willow and paper lanterns.

The wonderful Frome Lanterns are running a number of workshops from a basic skills demo to help you with your own lantern design, or more detailed how-tos for pyramids, houses, lollipops and more. They are also focusing on having as little impact on the planet as possible by using locally grown willow, paper tape and have a recipe for cheap and environmentally friendly rice glue on their website.

Mel Day and Aliss Vaas from Frome Lanterns said, “We really can’t wait to see you fill the streets with your magical lanterns and are always awe-struck by the imagination and creativity on show. This year we are taking it to the next level and would love to see you add coloured tissue to your lanterns to create even more show stopping designs.”

The workshops will take place on the following dates: at Frome Library on Saturday 29th October, 10am at Frome Library; and at The Silk Mill on Monday 14th November, 5.30pm, Wednesday 16th November, 4.30pm, Thursday 17th November, 6pm, Saturday 19th November, 10am, Saturday 19th November, 1.30pm, Sunday 20th November, 10am and Sunday 20th November, 11.30pm.

All the sessions are free, you just need to purchase the material kits which come in a variety of sizes and are available at the workshop or ahead of time from Discover Frome at the Black Swan Arts, or the Town Hall. Booking is essential and you can do so online, where you will also find inspiration and advice at www.fromelanterns .co.uk

Mayor’s Christmas Card

The search for the Mayor’s Christmas Card has also begun, with children up to 12 being asked to submit their tree themed artistic offerings for this year’s e-card.

Mayor of Frome, Cllr Sara Butler said, “Nature, and trees in particular, represent some much-needed peace and tranquillity, which feels more important than ever at the moment. We are very lucky here in Frome to be home to some very special and meaningful trees and as the town is packed full of talent, I look forward to seeing the creations that come forward.”

  • Pod Youth Club expands in newly renovated premises

The Pod Youth Club has relaunched and expanded its services after moving into a newly renovated youth centre in Frome.

After 12 years of running a bespoke youth club for children with additional needs, The Pod Charity – which supports young people and adults with additional needs – has relaunched its youth club service in the Vallis Youth Centre on Vallis Road.

The youth club is aimed at 8- to 17-year-olds and runs on Tuesday evenings during school term times and has had a significant waiting list for places.

However, with the new premises now open, the charity says there is no longer a waiting list to join the youth groups which run from 5.15pm to 6.45pm and a second group runs from 7pm to 8.30pm.

  • Wild about Frome – What’s the point of wasps?

A column by Frome Wild Bunch

Sometimes people wonder, ‘What is the point of a wasp?’ When we talk about wasps, most of us think of the black and yellow striped social wasps, disrupting picnics at the end of summer, homing in on that jam sandwich!

However, wasps are genuinely beneficial to our gardens: they have a role as pollinators, they are effective pest controllers and also scavengers of both fruit and carrion.

There are about 9,000 species of wasp in the UK: Buglife says that ‘these include the parasitic wasps, some of which are so tiny, they can barely be seen without a microscope. 250 of these are the larger wasps which have a stinger. Only nine of these are social wasps, which form large colonies.’

Only queen wasps (of social species) overwinter, seeking out shelter in sheds, trees and on one occasion, in my sock that was on the washing line! (Not a good outcome for either of us!) As the weather warms, she will emerge to feed and seek a suitable location in which to build her nest, often using outbuildings, roof spaces, animal burrows underground, or hollow trees.

  • Four-year-old girl raises vital funds for charity in Victoria Park challenge.

A four-year-old girl has taken on a fundraising challenge to raise nearly £500 for a local community meal service, inspired by her friendship with children and families who rely on it.

Iris Wyatt completed the challenge on Friday 23rd May by cycling and scooting nearly two miles around Victoria Park, completing five laps to raise money for Fair Frome’s Food @ Five service. The initiative provides hot meals three evenings a week for families in need.

Supporting Iris, friends and family cheered her on during the challenge, with her two best friends cycling alongside her for the final lap. When they crossed the finish line, they all celebrated with ice cream.

Iris said, “The challenge was really hard but I think it’s good that Fair Frome now has lots more pennies.”

  • Frome Community Bike Project raises £8,500 for Missing Links project

Frome Community Bike Project has donated £8,500 to a local initiative aiming to create a multi-user path connecting Frome to Radstock.

At the recent Frome’s Missing Links annual general meeting, the bike project revealed that over the last financial year they donated £1,500 to the group’s Crowdfunder campaign, followed by a further £7,000 in April.

Just two miles outside Frome town centre lies the start of the Colliers Way – a family-friendly, traffic-free path to Radstock enjoyed by walkers, runners, riders and cyclists alike.

Frome’s Missing Links group aims to extend this route alongside the existing railway line, continuing onto the riverside footpath and into Frome itself.

  • Sign swap ‘criminal damage’ as Frome sign found 10 miles away

Residents are being reminded that stealing or moving town signs is an ‘act of criminal damage’, with repairs to be funded ‘at public expense’, after Frome’s welcome sign was found in another Somerset town earlier this month.

The ‘Welcome to Frome’ sign disappeared and was later discovered on the B3355 in Midsomer Norton, about 10 miles away. A sign for Kilmersdon, a village in Somerset, was also moved and appeared in Frome.

Frome Town Council said the incident had damaged the Frome sign in transit and would now ‘cost time and money to resolve.’ It described the situation as a ‘sad sign of the times.’

Somerset Council is the authority responsible for road signs, including the Welcome to Frome sign, and said the sign will need to be repaired at public expense.
