BECKINGTON’S White Row Farm has once again been given the highest award in the Taste of the West hospitality and retail awards for 2017 for their Farm Shop.

This is the second year in a row the family business has been commended.

Judges said, “This is a thriving outlet with a spectacular array of South West products. This is an impressive place to visit where one felt one could happily spend an entire day.”

They commented on the knowledge of the fishmonger, the quality of the produce and the evidence of local sourcing that really stood out.

White Row has been running the farm shop business from their farm for over 15 years and have regularly innovated with the introduction of an ice cream shack, a fish and chip shop, a children’s play park and regular festivals giving locals a chance to come and meet suppliers and taste their produce.

Renowned baker, Tom Herbert, of Hobbs House said, “White Row is where the term ‘customer is king’ is redefined for a decade to come; they’ve blazed trail of innovation, customer service and outstanding quality, carving a path where others will surely follow. Steve and Heather are outstanding in their field.”

Owners Heather and Steve Tucker said, “It is hugely motivating to hear that such a highly regarded organisation as Taste of the West, who set high standards for judging, have once again awarded gold to our farm shop. It is a labour of love and every member of our team has had their hand in this success.

“We are lucky to work with such energetic and motivated people here who are real ambassadors in store for what we do on the farm.”

The farm shop goes into the competition to win the best farm shop of the South West with winners announced next month.

  • Frome resident shares story of British Prisoners of War at next Frome Society Talk.

A Frome resident who spent 25 years working for the RSPB will give a talk entitled ‘Birds in a Cage’ at Frome Society’s next Summer Extra talk on 25th June.

Derek Niemann is a freelance writer, author and a tutor for Cambridge University. Derek has been a country diary writer for the Guardian since 2003; he switched his column from Bedfordshire to writing from Frome in 2024 and is enjoying exploring the Somerset environment.

Derek will share the story of ‘Birds in a Cage’ a true story of a group of British Prisoners of War. In 1940s Germany they overcome hunger, hardship, fear and stultifying boredom through their shared love of birds and birdwatching. “Their experiences leave them scarred but set them on a path to becoming pioneers of the post-war nature conservation movement,” said Jayne Sadgrove from Frome Society.

  • Packsaddle Fields campaigners appeal to close £10,000 fundraising shortfall

In their final fight to save Packsaddle Community Fields, campaigners are calling on the community to help them plug a £10,000 shortfall to cover legal costs ahead of an appeal hearing in August.

The People for Packsaddle group launched a fundraising campaign earlier this year to support their legal challenge, but say they are still working to meet their target and urgently need help to raise the final £10,000.

The group is preparing to become a Rule 6 Party in the planning appeal, which will determine whether developer LiveWest can build 74 houses on the green space.

They say the funds are needed to secure legal representation, including a barrister and supporting legal team, to take part fully in the hearing.

  • Free event to explore: ‘How do we help creativity and community to thrive in Frome?’

A community event at Badgers Hill is inviting residents to come together and discuss how people can work together, open up possibilities and solve challenges to facilitate creativity and community in Frome.

The event is being delivered by Frome Town Council and Terrestrial, a company which commissions and produces arts projects. It is due to run on Wednesday 25th June from 9.30am to 1.30pm. Free tickets for the event includes lunch by Sonny’s Kitchen.

Terrestrial’s Tom Spencer said, “Every day in Frome, scores of creative people make great things happen. Independent artists and makers are busy painting, writing, sculpting, dancing and designing. Community groups are gathering to share food, dig gardens, teach sports and support young people."

  • New climate youth group launches in Frome

A new initiative encouraging young people to share their views and ideas in Frome’s climate conversation has been launched.

The Frome Youth Climate Action Group will support a team of 12 to 18-year-olds in Frome to lead climate action in their own way.

This project is part of Edventure’s Future Shed work, which focuses on creating opportunities for the community to come together around climate and wellbeing. It is open to young people who live in or around Frome, including those in school, home education or youth organisations.

Whether someone is passionate about the climate, curious to try something new, or interested in campaigning, creativity, growing, making or helping others, they are welcome to join the group.

  • ‘It’s getting tougher for all small charities’ – Frome Birth Talk extends community fundraising campaign until end of year

Local charity Frome Birth Talk has extended its fundraising campaign until the end of the year as it seeks to secure more monthly donors to help secure the charity’s future.

The campaign launched in March, with the charity aiming to raise £1,000 per month in regular donations to help cover running costs until 1st June. With that date now passed and £700 secured, the charity has decided to keep the fundraiser open until the end of year, in the hope to secure more donors and ultimately Frome Birth Talk’s future.

“We are extremely thankful for our one-off donations but it’s really helpful for us to see a projection of what is to come,” said counselling coordinator Lucy Hill who explained that the charity is hoping to increase the amount of people who can donate on a monthly basis.

“It’s getting harder and harder to guarantee grants, so to have a community of people who are supporting us regularly is incredibly helpful.”

  • Successful Climate Film Festival sees 100 international entries

The fourth annual International Climate Film Festival has been hailed a huge success as over 1,150 films from 100 countries around the world were submitted to be shown at the two-day event.

The festival ran on 18th May at the Cheese and Grain, and on 25th May at Rook Lane Chapel, where there was an Award Celebration Day. The festival also included a special launch of local director Charly Le Marchant’s latest film, Ancient Woodland Restoration, with a panel at Frome Town Council on 22nd May.

Festival director James Godman said, “The festival provided an opportunity for people to meet local green community groups like the Frome Wardrobe Collective and enabled visitors to enjoy music from local musicians, including Sue Harding and Francis Hayden; to get creative with eco-art and face painting; to learn about solar green technology and, this year, to listen to a thought leaders panel which included our local MP Anna Sabine, Diana Finch, author of Value Beyond Money, Matt Mellen, the Climate Action lead at Frome Town Council, Amanda Le Pivert – Earth House at Frome College, Rachael Wells from the Bath Climate Hub and many more inspiring panellists.”
