The showing of Richard Attenborough’s 1969 satirical film ‘Oh, What a Lovely War’ in July at the Westway Cinema in Frome raised £447.50 for local cancer Positive Action on Cancer.
This Frome Festival event was a collaboration between Frome Stop Wars Campaign, and Martina O’Connor of the Westway Cinema who very kindly donated all ticket sales to the Frome based charity.
‘Oh What A Lovely War’, which depicts the tragic consequences of armed conflict in an ironical fashion, was shown as part of the Frome Festival and Frome Stop Wars’ commemoration of WWI in this the centenary year. Richard Attenborough, who died recently, directed a star-studded cast, bringing to a wider cinema audience the original theatrical play.
On Tuesday 16th September representatives from Frome Stop Wars and local artist Pat Tayler who designed the poster for the film showing, joined with Westway’s proprietor Martina O’Connor to present a cheque to the founder of PAC, Jill Miller and her colleague Kelly Lewis.
In this year of the 100th anniversary of WWI the quest to support those fighting a battle with cancer contrasts with yet more calls for war, death and destruction. Let’s fight a battle with cancer and win the war for peace!
