FROME resident Tony House has the last Cabinet of Curiosity display of the year at Frome Museum, showing some of his wonderful fossils and minerals.
Tony grew up in Frome and built up one of the finest collections of minerals from the Mendip Hills. His interest in the natural world started at an early age and continues today. He is a self-confessed otterholic, is part of Somerset otter group and leads the otter surveys in Frome.
Tony’s curios will be displayed at Frome Museum from Tuesday 10th October until Saturday 11th November (when the museum closes for winter) and also during the Christmas Market.
The museum is offering members of the public who collect natural history objects, including bones, fossils, minerals and archaeology, the opportunity of displaying their treasures for one month in the museum. The museum will provide an attractive and secure space and help with labels. If people are interested, they can leave their contact details at the museum in person or contact the museum by phone or email.
Simon Carpenter, volunteer curator at Frome Museum says, “The Cabinet of Curiosity continues to delight our visitors and provides an ever-changing window on other people’s collections and their interests.
“Frome Museum is keen to continue this but needs more people to step forward to offer to loan some of their treasures and to say a few words to accompany them. It might be something that schools are interested in – either individual children or groups of children can offer an object to display. The museum will put the display together so this will make it very easy for people to participate.”
Frome Heritage Museum is at the bottom of North Parade by the bridge and is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am – 2pm from March to mid-November, and on Independent Market Sundays. The museum is reliant on donations and they hope that visitors will make a contribution when they visit. School groups are welcome throughout the year by appointment, as are groups societies.
