AFTER a break because of ‘you-know-what’, the Frome Fling Ceilidh is back by popular demand! The first Frome Fling Ceilidh took place in 2010, so Frome folk know by now that a ceilidh is a ‘fun-filled’ night of wild dancing, ‘good music and great company’; the word Ceilidh (kay-lee) in fact is descended from the Gaelic for gathering.
Organisers have shared five reasons why you should join the Frome Fling Ceilidh.
Organisers said, “1. No experience necessary! The beauty of a ceilidh is that everyone can take part, young or old, even those with two left feet! At the Frome Fling, you’re walked through the steps, so there’s no need to worry. The caller in the band will be with you every step of the way, showing the moves before each dance and continuing to call out helpful hints. No one takes it too seriously – it’s about having fun.
“2. Great authentic music! The Bigger Little Biggar Band is a renowned five-piece ceilidh band based in Biggar, southern Scotland.
“3. It makes you feel happy! The brain produces chemicals, an endorphin rush stimulated by the physical exercise of dancing and melodic lines of traditional melodies. People can experience extreme euphoria when specific frequencies and tempos combine.
“4. Delicious supper! You can make a night of it with a supper ticket for South Indian or Sri Lankan cuisine by Lungi Baba and Azeema.
“5. A fundraiser for a great cause! In aid of the charity Frome’s Missing Links, which works towards better and safer walking and cycling routes in the local area.”
Fiddler Sarah Northcott said, “We are looking forward to coming back down to play at the Cheese and Grain again. I’ve found that Frome folk really throw themselves into it. The floor is packed, and the atmosphere is fantastic.”
Marjory Hatvany, one of the organisers, said, “The electric bass in the band gives the tunes some welly. I’m a big fan of the natural ‘high’ you get from a ceilidh.”
The event takes place on Friday 27th January at the Cheese and Grain. Doors open at 7pm. Ceilidh Tickets £15. Additional supper tickets available for curry by Lungi Baba and Azeema £7.50.
(Tickets subject to standard Cheese and Grain box office charges).
