A FROME woman has raised over £1,000 for charity by completing a Tough Mudder challenge in memory of her friend who was due to complete the challenge with her before he took his own life.
Becky Surman took on the gruelling South West Tough Mudder endurance obstacle course as a tribute to her friend Jack Harrison, also from Frome, who had signed up with her last October, only to then take his life in December. She also completed the challenge to raise money for Papyrus a national charity aiming to prevent suicide in the young. Becky has so far raised over £1,000 and her Justgiving page is still open for donations.
The Tough Mudder course is notoriously difficult as it is an endurance race with obstacles. The course is around 12 miles long and at regular intervals participants have to complete obstacle challenges such as crawling through mud, swimming with electric eels, completing a tightrope walk and much more.
Becky said, “I have just passed the £1,000 mark which I am ecstatic about! I have had so much support and interest from so many people it has been incredible, but more importantly, it has given me a way to share my memories of Jack and how wonderful he was.
“I know he would have absolutely loved the course; the camaraderie was over whelming and it was such a laugh. It did definitely live up to its name of being extremely tough and insanely muddy! I know Jack was probably watching over, and laughing, a lot, but where ever he is I hope he is proud and touched to see that even after eight long months have passed, no one has forgotten him for even a second.
“ I will without a doubt be competing in this challenge again; my little way of holding a piece of Jack always in my heart. I would also love to say a massive thank you to Frome Caving Group members, who made a massive donation towards this cause. I have been well and truly touched by their generosity, especially as the group held a very special place in Jack’s heart.
“I am still leaving donations open for a short time for a magnificent charity and would appreciate any support I receive.”
