The Frome Independent and Black Swan Arts are teaming up with two Frome residents for a special supper club, showcasing food from Syria.
The team behind the monthly Sunday market are collaborating with the Black Swan Cafe’s head chef Karina and Lara Al-Zoubi and Somaya Ashrafani, who will be sharing traditional dishes from their home country of Syria.
The supper club forms part of The Frome Independent’s night school, a series of standalone evening classes offering local residents a chance to try food from around the world, or try their hand at a new skill. In June the market team welcomed Japanese chef Hideki Koike to the Black Swan for an evening of traditional Japanese food, made using seasonal Somerset ingredients.
For July’s supper club, Karina, Lara and Somaya will be serving up a three-course feast of traditional Syrian food, including shakshuka, baba ghanoush, kibbeh, falafels, as well as freshly made side dishes, salads, flatbreads and some authentic desserts. Karina is excited to be working with Lara and Somaya, to bring authentic Syrian food to Frome.
She said, “Syrian food is renowned for being absolutely delicious and is a must for anyone who likes Middle-eastern cuisine or just wants to try something new. I’m really looking forward to working with Lara and Soumaya to share their favourite dishes.”
The supper club takes place on Wednesday 17th July from 7pm at the Black Swan Cafe, 2 Bridge Street, Frome, BA11 1BB. Tickets are £25, or £20 for those signed up to The Frome Independent’s Market Maker membership club. To book your place, email the market team on admin@thefromeindependent.org.uk
Lara, Soumaya and their families joined the Frome community in 2018 and are supported by volunteers from Frome, working originally with Somerset County Council’s resettlement scheme, to establish their own catering business, with the possibility of trading at The Frome Independent later in 2019. The Black Swan Cafe is open Monday – Saturday as well as the first Sunday of the month. The next edition of The Frome Independent takes place on Sunday 7th July across Frome town centre.
