AS the summer months roll in, many people enjoy basking in the summer sun and sitting in the garden with an ice-cold beverage.
However, for the elderly, with the summer comes a higher risk of dehydration, an often-overlooked health problem that is easily preventable. For those with problems remembering, or conditions such as dementia, having a drink can often be forgotten about and in the summer periods this can have severe consequences.
The team at Butterfly Care have come up with a visual aid to help remind their clients to keep hydrated, with the aim of prompting those who might forget to drink.
Anne Pelling, managing director at Butterfly Care said, “It’s a simple, yet effective way to remind our clients to keep hydrated. When we visit our clients, we always ensure they are given drinks, and we also prepare drinks for them to have throughout the day. However, we sometimes only visit once per day, based on our clients’ requirements, so it is just a helpful way to remind them to keep drinking, even when we’re not there”.
