Iyad Sughayer, Jordanian-born Palestinian pianist and Winner of the Royal Northern College of Music Concerto Competition 2015, will give a recital on Saturday 5th March at 7.30pm in Christ Church, Frome.
His programme will include Mozart, Schubert, Liszt and Khachaturian. Iyad is a young man ‘going places’ – listen to him on YouTube.
He has studied in this country since he was 14 with scholarships to Chetham’s School of Music and then Royal Northern College of Music.
As well as the various competitions he has won he has already performed recitals and concertos across the UK and in the Middle East. His German debut is in Hamburg in 2017 – so this recital is something of a ‘first heard in Frome’ moment.
Frome resident, Ruth Windle first met Iyad Sughayer at Chetham’s International Piano Summer School in 2013 where he came second in the International Young Pianists Concerto Competition. She has followed his progress ever since.
Ruth said, “Iyad is a young man with a very promising career ahead of him and I am thrilled to be able to showcase him in Frome. I am also delighted that, through the enormous generosity of businesses and individuals in Frome, I have been able to raise sponsorship and donations to cover all the costs of the concert.
“All proceeds from ticket sales will go to supporting Iyad in his studies as he goes to take up a post-graduate scholarship at Trinity College of Music in the autumn. Iyad has done everything through scholarships – which says a great deal for his abilities.
“His parents were refugees to Jordan after the 1967 Israel/Palestine war so he has nothing behind him financially. It is a pleasure to support him in some small way. So now it’s up to the people of Frome to add their support by buying tickets and coming to listen to a wonderful evening’s music. The best New Year I could dream of would be for the recital to be a sell-out!”
