HOW do you fancy having a blowout on the Jubilee weekend with the Frome Town Band?
On Sunday June 5th the band is inviting anyone who has ever wondered what it is like to play a brass instrument to give it a go.
Every brass instrument you can imagine, including cornets, trombones and French horns will be by the bandstand in Victoria Park for all-comers to try. It is part of the band’s mission to find new members, young, middle-aged or old, who’ve always been curious to find out what it is like to play an instrument.
From midday, band members will be ready to let anyone have a blow and see if they might be able to tempt them to come along to the band’s regular Wednesday evening practice at Frome College.
Kirstie Jones, who plays the Flugel horn and is chair of the band, is full of enthusiasm for the project. She said: “We won’t judge anyone. This is an opportunity to have some fun and make some noise.
“This band welcomes everyone, whatever their ability or age. If you decide to join you won’t just be getting the opportunity to learn to play a brass instrument, you’ll be meeting new people who have lots of fun making music.
“We love playing but don’t take things too seriously. As a beginner we supply instruments free of charge, and the cost of playing with us is minimal.”
Jubilee concert
Later on in the afternoon – at 3 o clock – the band will be performing a Jubilee-themed set on the bandstand, which is guaranteed to get your feet tapping.
The set will include 15 classic tunes, including the Dam Busters theme, Sweet Caroline, Jerusalem, the Floral Dance and Is this the way to Amarillo.
Over the Jubilee weekend the band will also be going on a tour of care homes in the Frome area to take their music to those who can’t get out.
Chris Turner, the band’s musical director, said, “We’re looking forward to Frome joining us to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee with a ‘through the decades’ look at music during the Queen’s reign. In addition, we’ll be performing some British favourites and a finale fit for the proms!
“All sections of the band are playing at this event with our newest players in our beginner band playing in public for the very first time. Those of you that have seen our training sections before will notice a significant growth thanks to our school’s project which has so far introduced children in Berkley, Vallis and now Critchill schools to brass, completely free of charge! Looking forward to seeing you there!”
