EDVENTURE:FROME’S Start Up students have been busy setting up a community composting enterprise
The organisation explains, “Every year, Edventure:Frome runs an eleven-week course in social entrepreneurship, bringing together a team of young adults to start-up a real community enterprise. This year, the students set out on a mission to find a solution to Frome’s composting problem. That is, that a large proportion of commercial food waste is sent to landfill or large-scale compost.
“Working together with Brighton’s Compost Club and Peter Macdyen from the Frome Compost Project, they have found a way for commercial food waste to be collected and cycled back into our land. They are, if you will, closing the loop on the current linear system. But how exactly does it work?
The Process
“Small – medium businesses in town can sign up to Loop and receive a 5L food bin. When it is full, Loop will hop on a trike and head over to the businesses’s premises to collect the waste and take it to their compost turner, where it will be turned into, in the words of Start-Up student Tugba, ‘‘delicious, biologically-alive, nutrient- & worm-rich compost.’’ This will then be sold as wholesale to food growers, who’ll use the compost to grow their veg, which in turn will be eaten and thrown into the 5L bins, thus completing the cycle!
“If you’re a small – medium business in Frome and you want to be in the loop, now’s the time to jump onboard and become an Early Adopter.
Early Adopters Promotion
“Anyone that signs up during the first month of Loop will receive a discount, a shout out, and a badge. You will benefit from discounted fees of their services for the first three months, and you’ll also be celebrated and promoted on their social media channels. Early Adopters will be given a badge to display at work to show that they are a part of the community composting enterprise which aims to reduce Frome’s food waste.
The Launch
“If you’re as excited about this as we are, please do join us to celebrate its launch! Loop will be popping up at Frome Market on Saturday 26th June. You can meet the team, sign up, or simply find out more about the enterprise. You’ll also get the chance to experience live compost by examining some quality compost through a microscope and observing the live bacteria.
Call out for Artists
“Loop are currently looking for someone to design some visuals for their branding. If you’re interested in finding out more, please get in touch via email: students@edventurefrome.org”
