How do you take your Cinderella story? The age-old fairy story inspires countless interpretations, in various genres from Hollywood movie to opera, ballet and pantomime.
Two high-profile productions will be screened at the Merlin in the next few weeks. Cendrillon, Messanet’s sumptuous operatic version of the traditional tale, will be broadcast direct from New York Metropolitan Opera House on Sunday 29th April at 7.00pm. Joyce DiDonato sings the title role. By contrast, Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella is a thrilling and evocative love story set in London during the Second World War. The internationally acclaimed choreographer’s interpretation of Prokofiev’s fairytale score has, at its heart, a true war-time romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz.
Tickets for both shows are £16 adults, £10.50 concessions. www.merlintheatre .co.uk / 01373 465949
