Parents have raised concerns over the safety of Victoria Park, claiming it has become ‘unsafe’ for children at certain times of the day.
They say anti-social behaviour is making the park unsafe after school, with reports of children as young as seven being sworn at by older youths, who have allegedly taken their belongings and verbally abused parents who intervened.
“We’d like to support our children to become more independent in the community, but it’s unsafe,” said one parent.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said, “We are aware of three instances of anti-social behaviour in Victoria Park, Frome, which took place over three separate days, in which someone was seen riding scrambler-type bikes through the park. We have not received any reports of thefts or abuse towards members of the public.
“However, our Neighbourhood Policing Team has increased their patrols in the park and will deal with any anti-social behaviour in a robust way to ensure everyone can enjoy the park.”
Concerns over safety at Victoria Park have been ongoing in the Frome community. In 2023, residents launched a petition titled Make Victoria Park Safe Again, which received 182 signatures. Complaints included anti-social behaviour, public drug use, intimidation, harassment, littering, and flashing.
The police spokesperson added, “Over the past year, officers from the team have worked closely with Frome Town Council and have supported the installation of new CCTV cameras within the park.
“We encourage anyone who witnesses anti-social behaviour or other crimes to report it. You can do this by calling our non-emergency line 101, reporting it online, or speaking with one of our local officers. You can also call 999 in an emergency where there is a risk to life or limb.”
