THE Merlin theatre is looking forward to offering a warm welcome and lots of laughs this autumn.
Having already enjoyed a murder mystery and world class poetry, the Merlin now plays host to TV’s favourite comedy magician, Pete Firman, on 1st October. Famed for his appearances at the London Palladium as well as on John Bishop and Sarah Millican’s TV shows, Firman was also a favourite in Stephen Mulhern’s Next Great Magician as he performed his jaw-dropping tricks whilst having the crowd in stitches. See page 18 for more details.
For younger audiences, and their families, a host of brilliant character puppets with live music will arrive in town in the shape of The Zoo That Comes To You on October 9th. This warm, skilful Saturday afternoon treat joins even the youngest to the conversation about conservation – because Scarlet Oak Theatre know that small actions can have a big impact. Again, see page 18 for more details.
For mystery fans, ‘Where is Mrs Christie’ on 12th October brings a brilliantly performed biopic of the amazing Agatha Christie, asking many questions about her own disappearance. More than a touch of real life imitating fiction.
October will be rounded off in a rousing week of guffaws as a locally-auditioned cast of Frome folk present a re-make of 1960/70s comedy show, Dad’s Army.
Acting out four of the best known TV episodes on the Merlin stage, the team have worked hard to costume the pieces and manipulate their voices to create as faithful a revival as possible of this classic comedy.
With some proceeds going to Help For Heroes and most of the actors taking to the stage for the first time in over two years, show director, Anne Dimery, says, “Come along and give us your support! It’s been a rotten 18 months and we all need a lift. Theatres are meant to be full of life so get here early, grab a drink and an ice-cream and prepare to laugh ‘til you cry!”
